This BA (Hons) course teaches you about the importance of motivating and managing people within a business, showing you the link between successful performance and the people you employ. Drawing upon all aspects of people management enables you not only to gain the building blocks of knowledge and understanding but also a high degree of professional competence in the field of people management and development.

If you study this course part-time or via distance learning, you will be charged on a pro-rata basis. This means your fee will be calculated per module.

This module is intended to provide you with a broad understanding of what is meant by employee engagement, including how it can be linked to and yet be distinguished from other related concepts like employee involvement and employee participation.
Finance for Managers
You will prepare basic budgets based on standard cost calculations, as well as create basic extracts from financial statements.
Contemporary HR for Managers
You will learn to appreciate the current concerns among HR managers, and be aware of current and forthcoming UK and European legislation. You will deliver two, ten-minute team presentations.
The Professional Learner
You will undertake and report on a series of activities in relation to, and determined by, the specific programme of study. You’ll also produce a reflective account of each activity, articulating the learning and its future application.
You will propose opportunities for the creation of value for a range of stakeholders, through the application of marketing concepts and practices. You’ll also demonstrate transferrable skills, which are essential to a career in marketing and business. To do this, you will design an individual digital poster.
Understanding Organisations and Organisational Behaviour
This is a core module that introduces you to the basic concepts of organisational life. It focuses on four main topics, namely individuals, groups, structures, and processes. In essence, it helps you get an understanding of the workplace and the ways in which employees behave within an organisation.
This module will enable you to build a strong understanding of the legal issues that impact on the “people” aspects of the business. Both UK and European employment legislation will be explored and enable you to gain an insight into the practical steps employers need to consider, when applying the law. You will be exposed to both academic and practice based knowledge, giving you an opportunity to develop important skills that are transferable into the workplace.
Adding Value Through HR
This module looks at the important contribution that an efficient and effective human resource management capability can add value to an organisation. The purpose of this unit is to introduce you to HR activity and to the role of the HR function in organisations in general terms.
An Introduction to Consultancy
You will demonstrate a clear appreciation of the linkages between the roles of management consultants, as well as applying a range of theory, knowledge and skills to diagnose organisational issues. You will complete the module with a clear understanding if the skills needed for developing critical insights into organisational issues.
The Independent Learner
Working on an individual e-portfolio, you will identify the competencies relevant to your future career, as well as reflecting on your performance within your professional practice and co-curricular activities.
In this module, you will apply relevant strategic concepts and techniques of competitive strategy to the analysis of strategic choice. You will enhance your ability to contribute effectively to discussions, presentations or debates. Assessment will be an individual applied management report of 3,000 words.

The Contemporary Global Manager
The module seeks to address key issues confronting managers in the 21st century. The fast-changing business environment and the dynamics of international shifts in economic power have led to an increased interest in responsiveness of organisations. This will require students emerging from universities with business degrees to demonstrate a clear appreciation of the key issues of the industry.
Workplace Learning and Development
How do organisations develop their employees to stay competitive and retain talent? This core HR module aims to provide the learner with a broad understanding of the factors to be considered when implementing and evaluating inclusive Human Resource Development (HRD) activities in general and when considering Learning & Development (L&D) interventions.
The Life Long Learner
This module builds upon the learning foundation from the first year level 4 module Professional Learner Skills and the second year level 5 module, The Independent Learner. Students are given opportunities to develop the depth of their understanding of the critical issues in relation the development of soft skills to prepare for the workplace and for modern working life
Employee Relations and Reward
The aim of this module is to develop the student's knowledge, understanding and professional competence in the field of employee relations and reward management. An understanding of the relationship between management and employees whether unionised or not– which is central to effective workplace. The aim is to highlight the importance of legal framework in managing both employment relations and reward, to examine the strategic choices which employers confront and to examine recent moves from collective to more individualistic relationships.
Integrated Business Research Project (Optional)
The format of the practice-led Integrated Business Research Project will vary, dependent on the discipline you are studying or degree pathway you are on. This is a negotiated project, the topic of which need to be agreed with the course team. The project also has to adhere to the framework of ethical approval applied within the business school in the year of study.
Examples of formats include (but are not limited to): integrated case study (accounting; economics and HR); business start-up project (entrepreneurship); consultancy project (management, marketing); organisational improvement project (management); on-placement and post-placement project (all); and, dissertation.
You will experience a variety of teaching methods, ranging from a traditional lecture to a workshop, enabling you to lead a group discussion and improve your confidence. You will also attend seminars, where you explore more in-depth topics.
Our modules are delivered using a range of interactive IT interventions, which add a further element of fun and interaction to the learning process.
Each of the modules you study will be supported by Moodle, our virtual learning environment. Here you will find an outline of your modules, the assessments they entail and additional material that’ll help your subject understanding.
Assessment will vary from exams, to presentations, reports and posters.
During your second year, you will be able to take part in an international field trip, taking what you have studied and apply it to a global organisation. In 2016, students visited the EU Parliament in Brussels, gaining valuable first-hand experience of an established international organisation.
Company visits will also take place in each year of study and in recent years, students have visited businesses such as Cadbury World, BMW and Jaguar Land Rover.
Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development
Approved by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. This allows successful students of the BA (Hons) Business and HRM degree to upgrade their Student Membership to that of Associate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (Assoc CIPD).
You can also gain international insight and experience a new culture with our Erasmus exchange programme. Students have spent a term at a number of incredible institutions, including the University of San Diego in the USA, as well as destinations in Cyprus and Denmark.
Birmingham City Business School has mapped the learning outcomes of the CIPD Intermediate Level Diploma against the BA (Hons) HRM degree. This provides all students who successfully complete the degree programme the chance to upgrade to associate professional membership of the CIPD.
Students can also go onto study on Master’s courses in International HRM, Management Consultancy and various routes in Management.

Carina came to Birmingham City University from Germany.
