BCU is ranked in the top 30% of all universities nationally under the Government’s Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF) for our work with business, and local growth and regeneration. As outlined in our 2025 Strategy, we strive to realise our mission to be the University ‘for’ Birmingham through accelerating business growth and employability within the local economy.

We are doing this by delivering:

  • Practise-based research and knowledge transfer
  • Business growth expertise and support activities
  • A highly-skilled, work-ready graduate workforce
  • Interdisciplinary academic and industry collaborations

Our SME business support service BCU Advantage offers access to the knowledge, skills, and facilities regional SMEs need to launch a business start-up or achieve business growth. With a wide and varied offering of support activities and opportunities including our Business Incubator, one to one Business Analysis, Business Strategy Workshops, Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, Networking and Business Events and supportive blogs, content and podcasts.

We help businesses find highly-skilled and knowledgeable, work-ready graduate and student talent with our regular Careers Fairs, Meet the Employer Events and bespoke Employer Stands on campus. Job ads can also be posted directly on our Jobs Board and businesses can also partner with our account managed recruitment service to receive one-to-one support with all of their student and graduate recruitment needs. Business leaders and entrepreneurs can also join our Business Mentoring programme to help us shape the high-calibre graduates our regional businesses are looking for.

Our interdisciplinary collaborations at STEAMhouse help entrepreneurs, SMEs and organisations generate new solutions to tomorrow’s problems. STEAMhouse is a space for new ideas, which will continue to give organisations, from sole traders and start-ups to corporate business, a space to explore new solutions. That’s not all, we’re also offering the chance for you to participate in one of our hack-style STEAM Lab sessions to test out the power of our innovative STEAM combination and play with new ideas.

Businesses can also attend our popular networking and business events to find new contacts and opportunities, and book their own events at Birmingham City University’s wide and diverse selection of venues, offices and boardrooms, including catering and IT services if needed, with our account managed Event Booking Service.

These are just a few of the ways Birmingham City University is helping to transform the region as the University ‘for’ Birmingham.
