Essential Requirements

BBC or 112 UCAS tariff points from A/AS Level with a minimum of 2 A Levels.

Typical Offers (UK Students)

GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above, at the point of enrolment. Equivalent qualifications will be considered. Plus, you must have achieved or be completing one of the following:

UK Qualification Requirements 2019/20
A Level / AS Level BBC at A Level (112 points). A maximum of three subjects are considered. Other 6-unit qualifications can be considered in lieu of one or two A-level subjects.
Access to Higher Education Diploma Pass overall with 60 credits, 45 at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2. GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade 4 or above or equivalent qualifications must be offered.
BTEC National Diploma (12-units not including early years) / Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D*. Can be offered along with either one A-level, 2 AS-levels or one BTEC Subsidiary Diploma / OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma qualification to achieve a minimum of 112 tariff points.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Obtain a minimum of 28 points overall. Students who do not complete the IB Diploma will be considered on the basis of their IB Certificates and alongside other acceptable level 3 qualifications to meet 112 UCAS Tariff Points.

If taking the IB Certificate you will need to obtain a total of 14 points or above from three Higher Level Subjects.

Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher Level) Pass the Irish Leaving Certificate with a minimum of 112 tariff points, achieved in four Higher level subjects. This must include Maths and English Language taken at either Ordinary level (minimum grade O1-O4 (or A-C/A1-C3)) or Higher level (minimum grade H5/D1).
Scottish Advanced Higher

Achieve a minimum of 112 tariff points achieved in either three Advanced Highers or from a combination of two Advanced Highers plus two Highers. Where three Advanced Highers have been taken achieve a minimum of grades CCD.

Where a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers have been taken you must achieve (grades of CD in two Advanced Highers plus grades of CC in two Highers).

Maximum of three Advanced Highers can be considered together.

Fees for part-time students

Several undergraduate degrees are available on a part-time study basis. These are usually studied over five or six years with fees due based on credit requirements each year.

If you study over six years, then you will pay 50 per cent of the full-time annual fee each year.

If you study over five years, you will pay 50 per cent of the full-time annual fee for years one and two, and 66 per cent of the full-time annual fee for years three to five.

Additional costs

There are no compulsory additional costs or charges associated with studying on this course. While you may choose to purchase personal copies of text books, all our key text books are available from our library or online (subject to normal library loan and online access arrangements).

Based on the past experience of our students, you might find it helpful to set aside about £50 for each year of your studies for your personal stationery and study materials. All our students are provided with 100 free pages of printing each year to a maximum total value of £15.

Introduction to Event and Experience Management
20 credits

This module is designed to introduce you to the concept of management in the context of events and experiences. The module encourages you to think about what skills, attributes and tasks that managers perform in different situations with the purpose of recognising what makes effective event and experience managers. This module aligns with the Programme Philosophy by providing an insight into the respective industries, integrating sessions from industry experts to facilitate this. The module balances theory and concepts, supporting you to reflect and apply this content into real life scenarios.

Introduction to Venue Management
20 credits

This introductory module furnishes you with a basic introduction to the main elements of Venue Management within Events. Beginning with an overview of the purpose, principles and practices of high performing Venue Managers students are then taught the five basic elements of outstanding Venue Management, namely; Operations Management, Human Resource Management, Financial Management, Promotions and Marketing and Facilities and Safety Management (Edger and Oddy 2018). The connectivity and inter-relationships between all essential elements are exposed and explained to furnish you with a ‘holistic’ appreciation of high performance in this area.

Finance for Managers
20 credits

This module will provide a gentle introduction to the world of accounting and finance for business managers of the future and is designed for those new to accounting or those studying on non-accounting related degree programmes.

Marketing Foundations
20 credits

For those undertaking a marketing degree, this module will provide a solid foundation for your course; for those studying other disciplines, the concepts presented here are valuable tools for a future career in all walks of business.

Managing Teams in the Events Industry
20 credits

In this module you will explore theories, concepts and practice-based insights relating to high performing Eventing teams. Beginning with a behavioural overview of team dynamics you will learn about the structures and roles required in different Eventing contexts and scenarios. You will be introduced to the importance of labour/shift/team rostering and scheduling and the basics of contemporary HRM techniques relating to the successful recruitment, selection, induction, motivation and development of high performing Events teams. Towards the end of the module you will be introduced to the concepts of managerial styles within differing ‘team contexts’ and the theory of team lifecycles (form, storm, norm, perform, adjourn).

Building Your Brand
20 credits

This module is designed to introduce you to the concept of employability in the event, venue and experience industries. The module empowers you to build an external profile, experience base, and skill set to be proficient in applying for work experience and placement opportunities. This module aligns with the Programme Philosophy by providing an insight into the respective industries, integrating sessions from industry experts to facilitate this. The module balances theory and concepts, supporting the students to reflect and apply this content into real life scenarios.

Year Two

In order to complete this course, you must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 120 credits).

Live Event Experiences
20 credits

The aim of this module is to provide you with ‘real world’ event management experience. Integral to the module will be a focus on group work, enabling you to utilise your event management skills accrued at level 4 to exhibit decision making skills when choosing a viable event to execute, selecting an appropriate venue and promoting the event, and ultimately running their chosen event. The relevant literature is explored, but with a consistent view of the importance of applying theory and planning in practical business contexts.

Event Technologies and Digital Innovation
20 credits

The aim of this module is to provide you with an in depth knowledge of current and future trends in technology and digital innovation in the context of events. Integral to the module will be a focus on learning event management software which can be utilised in ‘real life’ scenarios. The relevant literature is explored, but with a consistent view of the importance of applying theory and planning in practical event, venue and experience contexts.

Venue Design and Supply Chain Management
20 credits

The aim of this module is to provide you with an in depth knowledge of the critical elements of venue design, and the impact of supply chain decisions on the success of a venue. Integral to the module will be the accrued knowledge of the three key supply chain decision phases and how you can apply this to the event, venue and experience contexts.

Contemporary Management Issues
20 credits

The module introduces you to contemporary issues in management thinking and practice. Building on your earlier studies you’ll work towards building a successful career in 21st Century management. An important question for business management students is: how can we most effectively manage today and for tomorrow? One notable issue for all organisations is that the internal and external business environments are in a constant state of flux. What does this mean for business and management?

Methods in Event Research and Project Management
20 credits

The aim of this module is to provide you with the knowledge, skills and insights to research a ‘live’ Events issue with a view to formulating practicable, impactful and value-added research project proposal which will be actioned in the final year. To this end you will be taught the key stages of methods in Events Research (i.e. identify question and objectives, isolate key literature and conceptual frameworks, select appropriate research methodology, collect and analyse data and write up a compelling report).

Personal Development as an EVE Manager
20 credits

This module builds upon the learning foundation from the first year level 4 module ‘Building Your Brand’. The module approach demonstrates to you the importance of continual self-development in achieving organisational objectives. You will assess your current skills and competencies with reference to current or future roles and link this to organisational objectives. Analysis and identification of skills and competency gaps, and how these can be overcome, shall be integral to the module.

Final Year

In order to complete this course, you must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 100 credits).

Managing Emotions in the Events Industry
20 credits

In this module you will be introduced to the theory of human emotion and its application – within the context of Events – to both employees and customers. Following consideration of the psychology of emotion (the pleasure/valence model and neurological science underpinning feelings and behaviour) you will consider how super-performance within Events is driven through driving emotional connectivity, first with employees and second – interconnected – with customers. With regard to staff concepts such as the Emotional Climate of Organisations, Emotional Buy-In and Emotional Intelligence will be considered in relation to creating outstanding service personification for Events (i.e. where the staff really personify the values and culture of the Event).

Consideration then moves onto how organisations – within the context of ‘emotional mobilisation’ – design Evocative Experiences that sear themselves onto the memories and recall of all Event goers. A range of evaluative methods are advanced to help students calibrate and measure the emotional impact of Events, leading to improvements in key sensory cues and ‘moments of truth’ at every stage of the customer journey that continually improve the Events Experience for all participants.

Global Manager
20 credits

This module takes a practitioner based, blended learning approach towards embedding key Management and Leadership principles in the global context as well as Intercultural competency and a range of transferable employability skills. Consequently, it provides a progressive conduit for students to gain a broad understanding of global issues affecting managers today’s as well as preparing the students to be global managers of the future.

Corporate Social Responsibility and Safety in the Events Industry
20 credits

In this module students aspiring to work in the Events domain are fully appraised of their legal and moral obligations with regard to holding Events. Following an exploration of core CSR & Safety Principles with regards to environmental, social and governance (with regard to both internal and external stakeholders) you move onto considering their impact (in relation to performance, quality and regulatory adherence).

Finally you consider how to implement CSR & Safety plans and strategies through communications, auditing and evaluative methods. At the end of the course you examine two further areas vital to Safety within Events, namely; capacity management and cybersecurity.

Integrated Business Research Project
40 credits

The aim of this module is to provide a framework for you to undertake a substantial piece of disciplinary-relevant research. It is founded upon Birmingham City Business School’s teaching and learning philosophy which integrates theory and practice.

In order to complete this course, you must successfully complete at least 20 credits from the following indicative list of OPTIONAL modules.

Experiential Customer Marketing
20 credits

.The aim of this module is to provide you with an in depth knowledge and understanding of how experiential marketing fits within the current event, venue and experience climate with the specific focus on ‘customers’. You will learn to plan, activate and evaluate experiential marketing for best results. Both real and generic examples will be provided to concentrate on customer interactions and address debates on the cost, reach and measurement of experiential marketing in the event, venue and experience industries. 

Operational and Process Improvement in Events
20 credits

This module introduces you to the core principles underpinning OPI (using the Harvard and Warwick approaches), swiftly moving onto the important continuous improvement concepts of TQM and Six Sigma (which provide overarching models for process improvement). You are then taken through the six key stages of OPI, namely; Context, Define, Analyse, Improve, Implement and Evaluate. They are taught how to use vital OPI tools to analyse and solve a ‘LIVE’ Events process issue whilst learning how to overcome resistance to change during the implementation of important OPI changes.

Legal Contracts and Event Bidding
20 credits

The aim of this module is to provide you with a comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the intricate nature of event bidding and the legalities associated with the processes. The module is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials and workshops in which you will be expected to contribute.

Event, Venue and Experience Management (EVE) integrates theory and practice. As such, teaching methods are designed to be diverse, inclusive and to reflect the global context in which you will operate upon graduating.

Methods include face-to-face, blended and independent learning, through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, work-based learning, ‘real-world’ projects and management games.

The methods by which you are assessed reflect the diverse nature of the skills an EVE graduate needs and typically include - but are not restricted to - coursework reports, essays, examinations, live company projects, posters and presentations. Your assessments will include individual and group work, to mirror the real world of work.

A programme strength is the emphasis on practice-based assessment where the focus is on enabling development of the knowledge and attributes required of an event, venue and experience manager.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI). This means that you can achieve the Level 5 CMI Certificate in Management and Leadership alongside your degree. The award is conditional on successfully completing the Honours degree programme in the appropriate module areas.

Professor Chris Edger holds the chair of Multi-Unit Leadership at Birmingham City Business School (BCBS), Birmingham City University.
