Covering all of the major disciplines in the creative sector, this programme allows you to develop the skills needed in today’s complex media environment.

UK students
Essential

BBC or 112 UCAS tariff points from A/AS Level with a minimum of 2 A Levels.

GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above. Must have been achieved at the point of enrolment. Equivalent qualifications will be considered.

A Level / AS Level BBC at A Level (112 points). A maximum of three subjects are considered. Other 6-unit qualifications can be considered in lieu of one or two A-level subjects.
Access to Higher Education Diploma Pass overall with 60 credits, 45 at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2. GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade 4 or above or equivalent qualifications must be offered.
BTEC National Diploma (12-units not including early years) / Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D*. Can be offered along with either one A-level, 2 AS-levels or one BTEC Subsidiary Diploma / OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma qualification to achieve a minimum of 112 tariff points.

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Obtain a minimum of 28 points overall. Students who do not complete the IB Diploma will be considered on the basis of their IB Certificates and alongside other acceptable level 3 qualifications to meet 112 UCAS Tariff Points.

If taking the IB Certificate you will need to obtain a total of 14 points or above from three Higher Level Subjects.

Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher Level) Pass the Irish Leaving Certificate with a minimum of 112 tariff points, achieved in four Higher level subjects. This must include Maths and English Language taken at either Ordinary level (minimum grade O1-O4 (or A-C/A1-C3)) or Higher level (minimum grade H5/D1).
Scottish Advanced Higher

Achieve a minimum of 112 tariff points achieved in either three Advanced Highers or from a combination of two Advanced Highers plus two Highers. Where three Advanced Highers have been taken achieve a minimum of grades CCD.

Where a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers have been taken you must achieve (grades of CD in two Advanced Highers plus grades of CC in two Highers).

Maximum of three Advanced Highers can be considered together.

Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate

This module will provide a gentle introduction to the world of accounting and finance for business managers of the future and is designed for those new to accounting or those studying on non-accounting related degree programmes.

Every day, billions of people spend their money on products and services without necessarily considering why they decided to buy those particular offerings. Each of these products and services have been carefully developed to fulfil the needs of a particular target audience of which each of us may be a part.

Whilst many people associate the word marketing with advertising or design, the marketing concept is far wider-reaching in its scope and is a core function within many successful household names, such as Apple, Disney, McDonalds and many, many more.

As demonstrated in recent CBI reports, for graduates to be successful within the workplace, requires that they possess the appropriate skills and knowledge, as well as have the right attitudes and behaviours required for the world of work. This module makes a significant contribution to the programme philosophy by providing the knowledge and understanding of all the key concepts upon which consumer behaviour is built. Introduction to Creative Concepts and Design

The aim of this module is to develop your academic knowledge and transferable skills needed to understand the creative process. This module will develop your skills and understanding of the creative process by facilitating working as individuals and groups. The principles of practice based learning will be applied throughout this module allowing you to uniquely experience the challenges and rewards of working as part of a creative team.

You will work as members of an agency team to develop a creative pitch and portfolio of artefacts. These pitches will encompass the skills suitable across diverse business sectors and will develop your understanding of the creative process, your role within a team and your application of the creative process to a defined task. This learning experience will give you insights into good design practice beyond theory, with the practice based approach strengthening your skills in this important area of marketing.

Technological advances within marketing now enable organisations to better identify and reach prospective customers. Organisations no longer obtain a competitive advantage simply by producing high quality products or services. Introduction to Retail Marketing

The aim of this module is to introduce you to the main subject areas of retail marketing, from consumer behaviour and segmentation to store location theory, multi-channel retailing and retail communication. This module is distinct in that it uses a combination of case studies, practical exercises as well as an examination of theoretical concepts, enabling you to appreciate the principles of retail marketing in practice.

Though not a pre-requisite to the retailing pathway within the suite of undergraduate marketing programmes, it will enable you to understand more about the core concepts of retail marketing, helping you to determine whether this is an area you wish to specialise in.

In line with the level aims this module will equip you with the practical skills needed to undertake effective research and analysis. Through the use of a live client brief that will form the assessment for this module, you will learn to differentiate a range of marketing research strategies and use a selection of marketing research techniques to initiate and undertake critical analysis, applying findings to solve a set marketing problem.

Service Experience Design
20 credits

The main theoretical and application focus of the Service Experience Design module is located within the multi-unit service sector and the field of service science. The importance of the service economy is evidenced by the macroeconomic shift over the last 20 years from goods to services in the most major industrialised economies and currently represents at least 70% of employment value added in most of these countries. Service productivity and service innovation are seen by policy makers as the key to future economic growth. In the same period, the number of multi-unit service organisations (such as restaurants, hotels and fast food chains) have more than doubled.

Strategic Marketing, Management and Planning

The success of most businesses rests with the effectiveness of their marketing strategy and planning, as it is the central determinant of returns to investors. Income is maximised when marketing undertakes effective planning that is driven by an appreciation and understanding of the marketplace, the consumer and the wider external environment. Therefore, it is mandatory that any marketing graduate has an understanding of strategy and planning, as it enables activities to be directed to the specific needs of that organisation.

One Planet Business

The issues of ethics, social responsibility and sustainability in business have moved from the marginal to the mainstream during the last 40 years. With the impact of consumption running at 1.6 planet’s worth of resources each year, society is increasingly looking to develop a long-term, sustainable vision for the future that takes into account not only the economic factors of business, but also considers the social and environmental impact of decisions.

As such, this module aims to provide you with an understanding of the role that marketing has to play in meeting the needs of the sustainability agenda. It identifies the nature and extent of the challenges facing organisations today and considers potential approaches for addressing these. In doing so, it aspires to creating a vision of the future in which organisations, consumers and government can work together to realise a one planet business strategy.

Course Structure

During your first year, you will gain knowledge and understanding of the major theories, principles and concepts of marketing, as well as gaining key transferrable skills that will be highly desired by employers.

Your second year will see you utilise the principles of marketing practice in an operational context, solving industry issues and critically analysing different scenarios.

During your final year, you will construct effective methods of communicating marketing concepts, generating well-reasoning marketing concepts.

Assessments will be linked to industry in order to ensure a coherent progression. Teaching will consist of practices and scenarios that mirror practice, enabling you to develop your analytical, critical reasoning and creativity skills. There will be the use of live clients for teaching and assessment, practice-based case studies and our Virtual Learning Environment, which will be used to support all modules.

Trips and Visits

You will have the chance to visit marketing companies and other businesses while on the course, learning first-hand how a company operates and markets itself successfully. In the past, students have visited leading businesses such as Sadler’s Ales.

I had already studied Business at both GCSE and A Level – it was a subject I enjoyed and that I understood well, but I wanted to challenge myself and do something slightly different at degree level, so I looked for a course which leaned more towards the creative side of things. I visited a few universities, but I spoke to students elsewhere who said they didn’t get much opportunity to speak with their lecturers, whereas at Birmingham City University the lecturers seemed very helpful and accessible.

When Lily Pebbles began her fashion, lifestyle and beauty blog as part of a digital marketing module, she had no idea how many doors would open up for her. Now she attends regular press launches for new products, collaborates with brands such as Forever 21 and was nominated for a Marie Claire blog award for her website 'What I Heart Today'.

Lily launched her blog as part of the Digital Marketing module in her third year of her degree in Marketing, Advertising and PR BA (Hons), during which students are encouraged to develop their own blogs to gain experience. Now, she has returned to the University as a guest speaker to encourage and inspire other marketing students.

OpportUNIty Student Ambassador

OpportUNIty: Student Jobs on Campus ensures that our students are given a first opportunity to fill many part-time temporary positions within the University. This allows you to work while you study with us, fitting the job around your course commitments. By taking part in the scheme, you will gain valuable experiences and employability skills, enhancing your prospects in the job market.

It will also allow you to become more involved in University life by delivering, leading and supporting many aspects of the learning experience, from administration to research and mentoring roles.

Through our courses we give you the skills and experience needed to get a head start when applying for jobs. But we offer something extra too – Graduate+.

Our unique programme gives you the chance to develop valuable skills outside of the more formal classroom learning. We award points for Graduate+ activities (including firewalking!) and these can be put towards a final Graduate+ award.

Our graduates have gone on to work various creative roles within a range of companies. Anton Perreau went on to become one of the 30 most influential people in public relations under the age of 30 in PR Week's ‘Top 30 under 30’. He works as a senior public relations consultant and account manager of Battenhall, a brand communications agency for the social media economy.

Lily Pebbles is a recent graduate who has gone on to become a renowned beauty and lifestyle blogger – a blog which she actually started as part of her digital marketing module. She now runs her own YouTube channel, attends regular press events, collaborates with brands such as ASOS and won a Johnson & Johnson Journalism Award for Best Independent Beauty Blogger.

Other students have gone on to work in the financial sectors and for commercial groups. Ricardo Douglas is now Commercial Manager for CS Group while Rebecca Sykes is Digital Account Manager and MOFILM.

Our Facilities

We are constantly investing in our estate and are currently in the process of spending £260 million on new learning facilities.

The Curzon Building

This course is based at our City Centre Campus – and specifically The Curzon Building, alongside other Social Sciences, Law, Business and English students.

The £63m building offers students a unique social learning space, including a dedicated student hub incorporating student support services, in the heart of Birmingham’s Eastside development.

The Business floors house an extensive number of IT facilities, breakout areas, and specialised rooms. The Marketing Link Agency is designed to replicate a modern marketing firm, allowing students to get real-life experience of working in the marketing sector. There is also the City Trading Room, which features state of the art stock market tracking equipment, keeping you up to date with all the financial comings and goings of the London Stock Exchange and Wall Street.

The Curzon building is also conveniently close to Birmingham’s business and financial centre, allowing for strong links between your studies and the real world.
