Christmas gift ideas

With Christmas just around the corner, now might be a good time to start thinking about what to give to your nearest and dearest. But of course, bearing the student budget in mind, we don’t want it to break the bank!

We have had a look around at what’s on the market this year and have picked out a few key items all under £20, that we think would make the perfect gifts. As well as recommending some great shops in Birmingham for you to browse. Depending on whether you are buying for someone who loves tech, handmade gifts, luxury or just a novelty gift – we’ve got it covered.

Luxury gifts

Candles are a great gift to give someone who loves luxury… Jo Malone? White Company? Yankee? All delightful of course, but hugely over budget when you’re a student. Well - you’re in luck, Aldi now have equally beautiful products for an average price of £3.99 – bargain!

Or if it’s someone who just loves their beauty goodies; you can never go wrong with a 3 for 2 Boots mix and match if looking to bulk-buy for family and friends.

Other beauty favourites, to make perfect stocking fillers could be mulled wine/Gingerbread man lip balm, hand cream, socks (with added personality).

Where else to look?

Jigsaw, Cannon Street.

Selfridges.

Novelty, games and gadgets

Know someone who just loves a good game to get stuck into? Or someone who would prefer a fun gift with a bit of humour? Why not give someone the emoji game, ultimate pub quiz, retro games controller, or a disco bulb… these would also make great gifts to give before the Christmas break so you can enjoy them together!

Where else to look?

MenKind, Grand Central.

Games Workshop, Queensway.

Homemade gifts

Red Candy isa Custard Factory favourite, where you can find lots of quirky Christmas gifts, and better yet they are full of deals. Save 5% on your first order, on top of the many savings they have on offer in the run up to Christmas.

Where else to look?

Smithsonia, Piccadilly Arcade.

Jam Jar Lights, Bristol Street.

Food lovers

Food-related gifts can be an easy win because let’s face it, we all love food! But if you fancy giving something more than just a box of chocolates or biscuits, then we’ve got some more options for you to consider.

Cheeky Nando’s - the phrase is a popular one and a Nando’s gift card will be undeniably appreciated. Why not give someone special a gift voucher for one of their favourite spots.

Avocado and sweet potato are favourites for many, so why not give someone their very own Avocado/Sweet Potato Cookbook so they can make more with the food they love. Or of course, you could even give them something as simple as an Avocado pin!

Where else to look?

Look for some of the best independent restaurants in Brum here.

Student gifts

Living away from home for the first time is sometimes a disaster – from working out how to use appliances, cook, and just generally navigating alone can be tough. If you know someone that could use a hand, why not get them the ‘How it works’ book, for your friends who just still haven’t figured out how to manage on their own.

Juggling lectures and travelling to and from your accommodation can be hectic, so these convenient comfort items might be just what your mates are after – an emoji travel mug, Star Wars The Last Jedi Heat Change Mug, or a Fizz Light Up Straw cup.

Where else to look?

Tiger, Grand Central.

Primark, New Street.

Experiences

And finally, why not give a gift that they won’t forget – like an exciting experience right here in Birmingham.

Ghetto Golf has recently opened in Digbeth, which is the perfect must-do experience to enjoy together with friends and family – and at only £10 a ticket, it would be crazy not to.

Or what about giving the gift of a great movie? The luxurious Everyman Cinema in Mailbox is the new way to enjoy the cinematic experience – with food and drink brought to you whilst you relax in a comfy sofa, who wouldn’t want to go?

With a range of events happening each month, some tickets to enjoy the brand new Royal Birmingham Conservatoire might just be what your friends and family are looking for. Plus! BCU students get priority discount to all conservatoire events so why not make the most of it.

If you have your own gift suggestions, or perhaps you’ve already bought your Christmas gifts, we would love you to share them with us!
