Early Career Teacher Support
Do you have Early Career Teachers taking up employment at your school in September 2023?
The Early Career Framework (ECF) came into force in September 2021 as a statutory requirement for all schools employing newly qualified teachers. Within the framework, schools must provide comprehensive training and support programmes aligned to all areas within the Teachers’ Standards for Early Career Teachers in their first and second year of employment. This additional year of support comes with some additional funding to cover mentoring time (£2100 per pair of mentor and Early Career Teacher).
Within the ECF the Teachers’ Standards have been broken down into specific statements to guide beginning teachers’ knowledge and application of teaching skills. Early Career Teachers will work through this body of knowledge and guided practice as part of their ongoing training during their first two years of practice.
The ECF significantly raises the profile of mentoring in schools. Mentors are recognised as experts able to guide and support beginning teachers to fully understand and develop their professional role.
To guide schools in the delivery of the ECF, the DfE have funded six national lead providers to design and implement a comprehensive 2-year programme. Schools have the option to align to one of the six approved providers - by doing so they will have access to a fully funded programme and additional funding to facilitate participation. Alternatively, schools can create their own ECF programmes and access either DfE approved materials or their own programme models - but these options will only receive core funding.
As part of the BCU Partnership, our ITE programmes is currently aligned to the ECF and CAPITA, a national lead provider, and our mentor training and CPD will support your mentors to work within both the core Content ITT Framework and the Early Career Framework.

This will be delivered online and will have appropriate adaptations and expert delivery of the ECF to a range of SEND settings. Would you like an additional opportunity to support your current ECTs' personal and professional development?
Birmingham City University is very pleased to offer a range of Early Career Teacher support sessions during each academic year. These online sessions will take place after school on identified Wednesdays and will build on the useful resources from the Early Career Framework accredited resources by providing the opportunity to partake in professional discussions with colleagues across the Midlands. For an overview of the sessions for this term, please go to the 'calendar of sessions' tab. The sessions are open to all:

Each session will be led by staff from Birmingham City University and the aim is to encourage shared advice and support for those Early Career Teachers working within Birmingham City University partnership schools.
