Overview
The MSc Applied Metaverse and Digital Leadership course is designed to meet the industry need to develop leadership and practical skills of those at the vanguard of digital technology and expose you to the pioneering concept of immersive technologies such as virtual, augmented and extended realities.
The Metaverse is a virtual shared space where users can interact with each other in real time. It is a collective virtual environment that encompasses virtual and augmented reality and the internet.
The Metaverse is being used more and more by companies to enhance co-operation, undertake virtual commerce, create immersive brand engagement, host virtual events and experiences and train staff through simulation.

Our MSc course in Applied Metaverse and Digital Leadership has been designed to meet the industry need for the development of skilled practitioners as well as managers and leaders at the cutting edge of the technology world.

As a student you will be exposed to the cutting-edge world of immersive technologies such as virtual reality, augmented reality and extended reality. The course additionally aims to give you the skills not only to be developers but also the leaders and managers of the future. The focus on digital leadership will develop your management skills and knowledge of managing innovation and entrepreneurship, strategic management and leadership.

Entry Requirements
At the point of application students must have GCSE English and Mathematics at Grade 4 (C) or above and a first degree (2.2 or above). Your degree can be in any field – whatever your background, this course will enable you to become a digital leader with business acumen and technological understanding.
Students may get advanced entry into the Diploma stage if they have successfully undertaken study of a broadly similar level to the Certificate stage modules.

Course in Depth
Modules
In order to complete this course you must successfully complete all the following CORE modules (totalling 180 credits):
This module will expose students to industry guest lectures from academic and/or industry who will be invited to introduce the latest trends in extended reality research and practice.
This module will cover the form and functions of different types of multimedia content, UI design and the STEAM pipeline.
This module aims to equip you with the theoretical and practical factors to be taken into account while designing a blockchain enabled system. Additionally, it covers the socio-technical and practical elements of decentralised applications developed on top of blockchains such as use of NFTs, crypto currencies, smart contracts etc.
Additionally, you will learn to design strategy roadmap for an area of blockchain application, focusing on market scope size, trajectory, competition and threats, and opportunities for growth.
This module will allow students to gain hands-on experiences in design, development, and evaluation of extended reality applications in groups. Content and supporting materials will be made available to students in the classroom and lab during timetabled session and also electronically via the module VLE.
This module will provide the individual with the skills, competencies, and knowledge to transform his/herself from a technical specialist to a technical leader.
The module is designed to provide you with a thorough grounding on how organisations might deal with various aspects of innovation and how the development of a robust strategy for innovation can lead to sustainable competitive advantage.
The purpose of the Research Project module is to provide a framework for you to undertake a substantial piece of Metaverse and Digital Leadership research. It is founded upon Birmingham City Business School’s teaching and learning philosophy which integrates theory and practice.
The Capstone Project consists of the following two elements:
- STEAM Digital Leadership Research Project;
- STEAM Digital Leadership Placement Project.

The Curzon Building
This course is based at our City Centre Campus – and specifically The Curzon Building, alongside other Social Sciences, Law and Business students.
The £63m building offers students a unique social learning space, including a dedicated student hub incorporating student support services, in the heart of Birmingham’s Eastside development.
The Business floors house an extensive number of IT facilities, breakout areas, and specialised rooms. The Marketing Link Agency is designed to replicate a modern marketing firm, allowing students to get real-life experience of working in the marketing sector. There is also the City Trading Room, which features state of the art stock market tracking equipment, keeping you up to date with all the financial comings and goings of the London Stock Exchange and Wall Street.
The Curzon building is also conveniently close to Birmingham’s business and financial centre, allowing for strong links between your studies and the real world.
