Tyub Sabir

Tyub Sabir, Construction Management Graduate

Since graduating from BSc (Hons) Construction Management, Tyub has been working as an Assistant Estimator at Galliford Try, one of the UK’s leading construction groups. We caught up with Tyub to hear more about his experience as a graduate.

What course did you choose to study and why?

The course I chose to study was BSc (Hons) Construction Management. The reasoning behind this was it allowed me the freedom to work in the office and to also be on site. There is also a level of problem solving required which I enjoy, especially in this industry where multi-disciplinary teams are required to work together to solve any sort of problem.

Why did you choose BCU?

I attended the Open Day and was impressed with the facilities and campus. The lecturers on hand were very polite and informative on the different course options available and what modules I would be studying. It was also good to hear current students' perspectives on the University and what services they offer.

When you started university, did you know what you wanted to do as a career?

When I started university, I didn't know which career I would find myself working in. However, my degree explored a wide range of career paths, thanks to the different modules we covered. This benefited me greatly as I discovered the role of an Estimator when studying a relevant module.

Was there a particular module that sparked an interest in a topic you’d never considered before?

I believe the taxation module we covered was really useful as I was not aware of how predominant it is in the construction industry. Working for a main contractor we are sometimes based on site, this means we can claim expenses for mileage and anything business related. However, the company is allowed to claim tax relief on their profits due to reimbursing us for our business expenses. It is just a good understanding of commercial awareness and important on how the business operates.

What is your current job role?

My current job role is Assistant Estimator at Galliford Try.

What is the most challenging aspect of your current role?

When we receive tender prices from subcontractors we have to scrutinise drawings to see if there is anything missing or if additional quantities have been picked up. Therefore, it is important to be able to fully understand the drawings and familiarise yourself with the specification.

What main skill from your university days will you take with you through your life?

Quantification was the module which laid the foundation for me to progress. Doing take-offs by hand instilled in me the basics, whereas now at my workplace it is all done digitally. But I have the confidence and option to carry this out either way.

How has your life changed since you have graduated?

I have worked on projects which are very close to where I live, this allows me to go past and get a sense of achievement knowing that all the work put in has paid off. My free time is a lot more scarce now compared to when I was at university as a full time student.
