From the Classroom to the Big Screen: navigating life after university as a Visual Effects and Film Technology graduate

After recently graduating in 2022 with a first-class degree in Visual Effects and Film Technology, Gabriel Trinc was kind enough to give us some information on how his university experience helped shape his current career and an insight into what he has achieved thus far.

Visual Effects - BSc (Hons)

Tell us about your course and your favourite modules.

Throughout my undergraduate degree, the course gave me a diverse range of modules and opportunities. I got the chance to use a wide range of camera equipment which helped me gain hands-on experience and experiment creatively. We had continued support from our lecturers and they always looked out for me and encouraged me throughout the course.

The modules that resonated most with me were Camera Tracking, Simulations and Virtual Production. A module that I would say helped benefit my current career most was the new Virtual Production module because we got to use Unreal Engine. Unreal Engine is the most popular software right now, and companies are tending to shift their work through the Unreal Engine pipeline, so having hands-on experience with it has benefitted me greatly.

How did this experience help you secure your current role?

My university experience was the reason I was able to achieve the position I am in. I currently work as a Matchmove Artist working at Framestore in London. As well as this, I also have a part-time self-employed role directing music videos. My tutors were very influential and important in helping me secure my role as their experience helped to give me a working knowledge of the media and visual effects industry.

Tell us about your previous employment and credits

My first job in industry was as a Camera Tracker in my third academic year. I was able to do this role whilst studying, which was a great experience to prepare me for future employment. I worked with Cinesite on a fixed-term contract for four months. Through this job, I was able to gain opportunities to work with highly skilled individuals in the field which helped expand my understanding of camera tracking at a professional level. I got to work on a few well-known shows which was exciting, some of these include; Moonlight (2022), The Man Who Fell of the Moon (2022), Thor Love and Thunder (2022).

Gabriel’s final thoughts

The University has helped me find out what I want to do in my future endeavours and has really influenced where I am right now. The course taught me all I know about camera tracking software. From this, I decided that this was the career path for me.
