Gary has taught Sociology at Birmingham City University since 2007. Prior to this he taught at the University of Brighton, the University of Sussex, and Manchester Metropolitan University.

Gary currently teaches undergraduate students on modules aligned with his research interests: 'Classical Social Theory’, ‘Contemporary Social Theory', and 'Music and Society'. In addition to this, Gary supervises undergraduate Sociology dissertation students, he is the Year 2 Tutor for Sociology, the ERASMUS/study abroad tutor for all sociology and criminology routeways, and also the cluster lead for ‘Cultural Sociology’ as part of the Centre for Critical Social Research.
