Dr Jessica Guth, Head of the School of Law at Birmingham City University, has contributed a chapter to the Oxford University Press book on Women and Leadership in the European Union, adding to the existing literature on leadership in European Union institutions.
The book, published in 2022, provides the first authoritative account of women’s leadership in the European Union and more broadly to what extent women can access and exercise leadership, and with what consequences and impacts.
Gender and Legal Institutions
Dr Guth’s chapter demonstrates the value of interdisciplinary research and how understanding legal institutions can add to the understanding of gendered issues in leadership in a European Union context.
It provides insight to the role of Advocate Generals at the Court of Justice of the European Union and notes that there appears to be no difference in terms of the number or types of cases dealt with between men and women and that gendered impacts are complex and multifaceted.
Dr Guth’s chapter points to the need to undertake further research; particularly qualitative work and work directly with the judges and other staff to fully understand how gender plays out in the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
