Nicola is a registered mental health nurse completing her degree with honours in Mental Health Nursing at Oxford Brookes University. She has an MSc in General Psychiatry which she completed at Keele Postgraduate Medical School. In 2013 Nicola was awarded her Educational Doctorate and she has since become a Senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a SEDA accredited doctoral supervisor and also a certified Reality Therapist and qualified beautician.

Coming directly from the clinical area as a mental health nurse working in the field of substance misuse, Nicola came into academia in January 2003 as a senior lecturer. She loves teaching and her role as the HELS Faculty RPL Advisor / Senior Lecturer / Professional Navigator / Academic Advisor / Doctoral Supervisor at Birmingham City University is varied and involves teaching topics such as reflection and reflective practice, mental health / substance misuse and academic skills.

Nicola also supports students out of the classroom environment particularly in the area of academic skill and critical thinking development, doctoral supervision and, in her role as professional navigator, those students who want to develop themselves personally and professionally within their academic continuing professional development profile.

Nicola's main passion and interest lies in supporting the development of critical thinking, reflection and reflective practice and helping our students to become the most effective reflective practitioner they can be. She has recently published a book in this area titled “The Student Nurses Guide to Successful reflection – ten Essential Ingredients”.
