Your learning will embrace the development and operation of business markets, the management of key resources including human capital, financial management, strategic management and cultural awareness, since we believe business can’t be studied in isolation.

In addition, you’ll gain an insight into digital business, exploring how technology has remodelled the business world, and reflect on accompanying issues around social responsibility and ethical behaviour.

It will also develop your core behaviours through learning activities that enable you to practise, exhibit and develop confidence in enterprise and entrepreneurship.

BA (Hons) Business (Marketing) will equip you with the communicative, administrative and creative skills needed to make an impact in the marketing industry.

Essential Requirements

BBC or 112 UCAS tariff points from A/AS Level with a minimum of 2 A Levels.

Typical Offers (UK Students)

GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above, at the point of enrolment. Equivalent qualifications will be considered. Plus, you must have achieved or be completing one of the following:

UK Qualification Requirements 2019/20
A Level / AS Level BBC at A Level (112 points). A maximum of three subjects are considered. Other 6-unit qualifications can be considered in lieu of one or two A-level subjects.
Access to Higher Education Diploma Pass overall with 60 credits, 45 at Level 3 and 15 at Level 2. GCSE Mathematics and English Language at grade 4 or above or equivalent qualifications must be offered.
BTEC National Diploma (12-units not including early years) / Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma D*D*. Can be offered along with either one A-level, 2 AS-levels or one BTEC Subsidiary Diploma / OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma qualification to achieve a minimum of 112 tariff points.
BTEC Extended Diploma (18-units not including early years) / Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Diploma DMM (112 points).

International Baccalaureate Diploma

Obtain a minimum of 28 points overall. Students who do not complete the IB Diploma will be considered on the basis of their IB Certificates and alongside other acceptable level 3 qualifications to meet 112 UCAS Tariff Points.

If taking the IB Certificate you will need to obtain a total of 14 points or above from three Higher Level Subjects.

Irish Leaving Certificate (Higher Level) Pass the Irish Leaving Certificate with a minimum of 112 tariff points, achieved in four Higher level subjects. This must include Maths and English Language taken at either Ordinary level (minimum grade O1-O4 (or A-C/A1-C3)) or Higher level (minimum grade H5/D1).
Scottish Advanced Higher

Achieve a minimum of 112 tariff points achieved in either three Advanced Highers or from a combination of two Advanced Highers plus two Highers. Where three Advanced Highers have been taken achieve a minimum of grades CCD.

Where a combination of Highers and Advanced Highers have been taken you must achieve (grades of CD in two Advanced Highers plus grades of CC in two Highers).

Maximum of three Advanced Highers can be considered together.

Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate

Advanced Welsh Baccalaureate Skills Challenge Certificate with grade B plus grades BB at A-Level (or equivalent qualifications).

Must be offered along with either two A-levels (grades B and B), two 6-unit BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas / OCR OCR Cambridge Technical Introductory Diplomas (grades D and M) or a BTEC 12-unit National Diploma / OCR OCR Cambridge Technical Diploma (grades DM).

Professional Development
20 credits

You will develop and practice the skills you need to make the transition to higher education. You’ll be encouraged to explore and embrace opportunities available within and across faculties, becoming a more independent learner. 

Business Foundations
20 credits

Within this multi-disciplinary module, you’ll work with colleagues studying other programmes within the Business School, exploring how to run a business effectively through a business simulation. You’ll run a virtual business, and – with support and guidance – respond to business issues and challenges, rectifying them as you will when it comes to facing such situations in real life.

Marketing Foundations
20 credits

This module will teach you to be able to propose opportunities for the creation of value for a range of stakeholders through the application of marketing concepts and practices in a variety of for-profit and not-for-profit organisations.

Essential Analysis for Business
20 credits

This module introduces a range of methods and techniques for calculating and analysing data applicable to business. Where possible the calculations are based on real world data and will include some large and complex data sets.

Statistical techniques such as correlation, regression and hypothesis testing will be covered so that business useful techniques such as forecasting to be introduced. Data manipulation, such as the production of Pivot Tables, will be covered, 

Business Environment
20 credits

You will be able to examine the theoretical perspectives that underpin our understanding of organisations and management activities. This module seeks to give you a firm grounding in the philosophies underpinning basic economic/market approaches, why organisations exist, and how and why industries take particular forms at any given time.

In order to complete this course a student must successfully complete at least 20 credits from the following list of OPTIONAL modules.

Fundamentals of Business Enterprise Systems
20 credits

The module provides the theory and practical skills and knowledge for the fundamental of business enterprise systems within public and private sector organisations, providing the history of enterprise systems within businesses and the current transformation to digitalization and industry 4.0, addressing the challenges faced by businesses to adopt and provide agility through the use of enterprise systems solutions.

Understanding Organisation and Organisational Behaviour
20 credits

The module provides the theory and practical skills and knowledge for the fundamental of business enterprise systems within public and private sector organisations, providing the history of enterprise systems within businesses and the current transformation to digitalization and industry 4.0, addressing the challenges faced by businesses to adopt and provide agility through the use of enterprise systems solutions.

The module will also provide the students with skills and introduction to SAP enterprise systems within the industry and how students can adopt SAP to address some of the business enterprise systems challenges.

The module will be 100 per cent coursework applying their knowledge and skills on the real industry based cases at the CDSE lab and learning through the process by engaging with the CDSE industry partners.

Consumer Psychology
20 credits

Providing a sound foundation on which to base future study, Consumer Psychology teaches you an important factor in producing effective marketing. You’ll examine individual (personality, self-identity, attitudes) and group influences (peers, family, culture) linked to a variety of disciplines, enabling you to make effective marketing decisions. An array of factors influence people’s behaviour when it comes to purchase decisions, so this module will ensure you’re aware and knowledgeable of them.

The module focuses on the tools and techniques used by operation managers within service and manufacturing institutions, ensuring activities are in line with corporate and market objectives. 

Applied Management
20 credits

Application of business strategy is highly important in every business, bringing together findings from operations, finance and marketing to create important visions and targets. In this module, you’ll discuss key issues, look at case studies and specific information to gain a solid understanding of management strategy application.

Contemporary Business: Practice and Solutions
20 credits

This module investigates current issues that impact upon business organisations, providing you with a greater awareness of the challenges modern business face. 

Accounting for Business
20 credits

You will gain an understanding of how financial statements are prepared, as well as being introduced to the language spoken by accounting professionals. 

Business Entrepreneur
20 credits

This module provides you with the direct experience in how to conceive, present and communicate an attractive and credible business plan. You’ll become aware of the theory and practice of entrepreneurship in different international contexts.

Creative Problem Solving
20 credits

This module is designed to allow you to develop your problem solving skills in creative ways. The module will explore understandings of creativity and how creative thinking can make a difference. Problem solving is an important skill for more effective study and employability. This module will examine what a problem is (a gap between where you are and where you want to be) and the importance of imaginative fact finding and redefinition.

Managing Behavioural Change
20 credits

Changing or modifying human behaviour remains one of the most intricate and challenging facets of contemporary marketing practice. Often referred to as social marketing, this application of marketing practice, enhanced by the use of sociological and psychological theories and frameworks, is best known for its use in public health campaigns such as anti-smoking, drink-driving, drug abuse, sexual health with the aim of improving the quality of life for the whole of society.

Cross-Cultural Management
20 credits

Management is no longer seen as emerging from, or directed to a single culture. While much management theorising has for the last century or more emerged from ‘the west’, increasingly theorists and practitioners recognise that what management is, is highly conditioned by the culture within which it is carried out. Equally, management theory is itself recognised as being culturally conditioned. This gives rise to the interesting issue of how to manage in an increasingly globalising world.

Supply Chain Management
20 credits

This module will give an integrative perspective of the business organisation and underpinning knowledge of Supply Chain, Logistics and Operations Management. It provides students with an introduction to the management principles, processes and the environment within which the Supply Chain manager operates. Core to the module will be an examination of management decision-making and the range of tools and techniques used to support the Supply Chain process.

Business Process and Systems

This module encourages you to develop an in-depth understanding of the analysis of business operations and processes, looking at real-life business plans and developing relevant theories in workshops.  

E-Business

With the business environment undergoing constant changes, organisations can no longer obtain a competitive advantage by simply producing high-quality products. This module will equip you with the knowledge you need to be successful in e-business, using modern techniques to push business products.

International Business
20 credits

This module provides you with an introduction to the main issues of international business, dealing with the cultural, administrative and economic differences around the world, and how they shape modern businesses. 

Integrative Business Research Project
40 credits

This module gives you the chance to undertake a substantial piece of relevant research in an area that interests you. Once the topic has been agreed with the course team, you will conduct extensive research, form adequate conclusions and showcase the skills you have learnt so far.

Business Development
20 credits

This module provides students with a thorough grounding in the techniques of business development needed to achieve organisational objectives. Whilst the module focuses primarily on the sales process within business to business manufacturing and retail contexts, it also explores business to consumer contexts. Employment in sales related careers within the business to business sector represents 8% of total UK employment – one of the UK’s largest sectors of employment and is forecast to grow by 12% by 2020.

Contemporary Global Management Issues
20 credits

The module seeks to address key issues confronting managers in a rapidly globalising 21st century. The fast changing global business environment and the dynamics of international shifts in economic power have led to an increased interest in responsiveness of organisations. As you graduate from university with your business management degree you will need to demonstrate a clear appreciation of the key issues of the day and the theoretical work that has attempted to explain them. The module seeks to equip you with ability to critically analyse case material and to engage in meaningful debate both aurally and in writing. The module will be delivered via lectures and seminars with opportunities for students to participate in discussions around selected issues of the day that have global significance, for example the position of women in senior management positions, regional groupings in a global economy, labour in an integrating world economy, and ethics and corporate social responsibility in international markets.

Global Manager
20 credits

In today’s complex and highly dynamic global business environment, Managers are expected to possess and utilise the requisite skills and sound application of knowledge to meet set goals.

This module takes a practitioner based, blended learning approach towards embedding key Management and Leadership principles in the global context as well as Intercultural competency and a range of transferable employability skills. Consequently, it provides a progressive conduit for students to gain a broad understanding of global issues affecting managers today’s as well as preparing the students to be global managers of the future.

Course Structure

A variety of delivery approaches will be utilised throughout the programme, including lectures, seminars, tutorials, workshops, peer teaching and learning, project-based learning, experiments, games and technology-enabled learning.

Teaching will consist of variety of different methods and in most scenarios will mirror practice.  Business education is about enabling students to develop their analytical, critical reasoning and creativity skills to meet the demands of the contemporary and enterprising workplace. 

To achieve this, complimentary course delivery methods will be used, alongside established teaching methods.  This will include the use of live projects and practice-based case studies, for both teaching and assessment. A complete Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) will be used to support all modules, enabling you to undertake appropriate independent leaning.

A wide variety of assessment methods are used, and throughout the programme you will be expected, with the appropriate support, to deliver both individually and in groups, reports, presentations, essays, project plans, exams and proposals.

Trips and visits

You will have the opportunity to visit a number of leading businesses during your studies, both locally and across the country.  Recently, students visited leading brewery company Sadler’s Ales, gaining an innovative insight into how a successful business runs. 

International Opportunities

During your second year, you have the option to undertake the Study Abroad module, where you can examine an interdisciplinary topic within an international setting. You’ll create a digital story suitable for a range of audiences, and self-reflect on the impact of an international experience.

You can also gain international insight and experience a new culture with our Erasmus exchange programme. Students have spent a term at a number of incredible institutions, including the University of San Diego in the USA, as well as destinations in Cyprus and Denmark.

Further Study

As a business graduate, you’ll have the opportunity to progress to one of our postgraduate courses such as an MBA or one of our MSc Management courses. We’ll provide advice and support to help you to decide what path is right for you based on your interests and career goals.

Because of the wide range of topics covered on this course, you could also go on to study towards professional qualifications in accountancy, human resources or marketing.

The Curzon Building

This course is based at our City Centre Campus – and specifically The Curzon Building, alongside other Social Sciences, Law, Business and English students.

The £63m building offers students a unique social learning space, including a dedicated student hub incorporating student support services, in the heart of Birmingham’s Eastside development.

Steve Harris has previously worked for Lafarge as both a design draughtsman and quality controller in their manufacturing plant, and then went on to work as an aircraft engineering manager within the Royal Air Force. His research interests currently include business sustainable enterprise and leadership identity.

Cindy Millman joined the Business School in 2004 after completing her MSc in Business Management and Marketing. She has worked on several large projects in the entrepreneurship, innovation and technology transfer fields, with specific focus on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
