Can you tell us a little more about your project?

The project was based on designing for real world retail. I set out to design for an online retailer aiming to reach an urban clientele. This carved media unit is made from laminated and moulded aeorply wood, and finished with lacquer.

Where did the inspiration for it come from?

As curved TVs are trending, it was an opportunity for me to create a media cabinet befitting curved TV profile. The desire to explore the dynamics of materials prompted the urge to use aero-ply wood to facilitate the design.

How important is being able to exhibit externally?

It will be an opportunity to showcase my design and display my making skills. It’s also an opportunity to meet customers and retailers, an act which might generate business leads. It will also build my confidence by assuring customers and retailers that I am reliable and ready to offer my services.

What has your highlight of the course been so far?

Designing for STARPACK competition. The project required the designing of a product using cardboard materials. Being able to design a product and using materials other than the usual wood, was quite inspirational. The overall outcome was outstanding. It’s something I will pursue as an alternative career.

Could you tell us a little more about your design interests?

I would like to incorporate traditional and modern/contemporary design. Traditional designs still play a big part in home furnishings. I intend to bring different aspects from different past periods into the present.
