When it comes to applying to most universities, having a BTEC Level 3 is no different to A Levels. If you’ve heard any different, feel free to ignore it! Here’s why studying a BTEC won’t hold you back if you're thinking about going to uni.
The pros of applying to university with a BTEC
1. BTECs prepare you for university-style learning
If you’re studying a BTEC, then by now you’ve probably polished your research skills, refined your referencing and are a seasoned pro at managing multiple deadlines. Well, BTECs work similarly to university, so if you’re familiar with the pattern of research, coursework and deadlines, you’ll be pretty well prepared for the reality of getting the work done at uni.
2. You'll have valuable work experience to draw upon
On top of preparing you for the academic aspect of going to uni, your BTEC will provide you with industry experience through the work placements you complete. These will not only give you a better idea of how theories work in practice but also support your university application by giving you real-life experiences to talk about in your personal statement.

3. It’s just as easy to apply with a BTEC
Contrary to popular belief, BTECs are just as credible and desirable to admissions officers at the majority of UK universities (95 per cent), according to Which? University. More than 100,000 BTEC students apply to UK universities each year, so don’t worry about not having done A Levels, as you won’t be alone.
Take a close look at the entry requirements for your chosen course to make sure you tick all the boxes:
- Does the course need a mix of BTECs and A Levels?
- Do you have the right amount of UCAS points?
- Does the course ask for particular subjects or grades?
4. You usually get your results early
While we appreciate things are up in the air with exams and results at the moment, the continual assessment nature of BTECs (and their early results date) usually means that BTEC students have a better idea of their grades a little earlier on. This can be really useful when conducting your research, and also means that if you make a last minute decision to apply to uni, you have more time to shop around and see what’s on offer compared to those that might be waiting on A Level results.
