Sport clubs at BCU
If you love sport, we've got your back. All abilities are welcome to try out for our British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) teams. Meet your future teammates and find out more about training and fixtures during our Welcome Fairs in September and January.
How to join a team
Whether you're competing at the highest level or enjoy playing a sport for fun, we welcome students of all abilities. To join your club or sport, complete the Expression of Interest form on the BCU Sport Linktree.
All sports and clubs will also be at our Welcome Fairs in September and January. Come and chat with us to find out how to get involved.
How much does it cost?
To join a team, you'll need to buy a BCU Sports membership. This costs either £180 for a single payment, or you can pay with 3x £60 instalments.
BCU Sports membership covers:
- 24-week sports program
- Coaching
- Travel to away fixtures
- Medical clinic access
- Strength and conditioning support
- NGB sports insurance
- BCU Sport training t-shirt.
- Represent Birmingham City University in BUCS competitions.

Athletics - Men and Women
Athletes of all abilities are welcome to join the club. You'll need to complete a questionnaire before you start, detailing your events and skill level. Athletics training sessions are twice a week. Follow BCU Athletics on Instagram or join their WhatsApp group.
Badminton - Men and Women
BCU Badminton train a couple of times a week. BCU Men's Badminton team compete in the BUCS Midlands league, while male and female competitors enter BUCS National events. Follow BCU Badminton on Instagram.
Men's basketball
Men's basketball at BCU is made up of 2 teams that compete in the BUCS league. They train a couple of times a week, evenings and have regular BUCS fixtures. Follow BCU men's basketball on Instagram.
Women's basketball
Players of all abilities are welcome to join BCU women's basketball. The team train once a week. You can find out more by following them on Instagram.
Boxing - Men and Women
BCU Boxing Club is delivered through Pat Benson Boxing Academy. We also have a partnership with Wilder Fight Night, raising money for the Oddballs Foundation.
Cricket - Men and Women
BCU have a men's and women's cricket team. There are a couple of training sessions a week, including one for women only. Follow BCU Cricket on Instagram for more details.
Men's football
Men's football is one of the largest sports clubs at BCU. Multiple teams compete in the BUCS league, and one in the Higher Education Development FA League. Men's Hockey
BCU Men's hockey team compete in the BUCS league. There are a mix of coached and uncoached training sessions during the week. Follow BCU Men's Hockey on Instagram.
Women's hockey
BCU Women's hockey team compete in the BUCS league. There are a mix of coached and uncoached training sessions during the week. Follow BCU Women's Hockey on Instagram.
Netball
BCU Netball have multiple teams competing in the BUCS league. They offer a mix of training sessions. Follow BCU Netball on Instagram.
Padel - BCU Active
Staff and students of all abilities are welcome to play padel every week. Book and play sessions are on Wednesday afternoons, and are run by BCU Active.
Pickleball - BCU Active
BCU Active run pickleball sessions every week for staff and students of all abilities. Book and play sessions are on Thursday evenings.
Men's Rugby
BCU Men's Rugby has one team competing in the BUCS league. They train once a week. Follow BCU Men's Rugby on Instagram.

BCU Women's Rugby has one team competing in the BUCS league. They train once a week. Follow BCU Women's Rugby on Instagram.
Running
BCU Running has one session a week. This caters for all abilities and is not a competitive club.
Squash - Men and Women
Players of all abilities and genders are welcome. Training sessions are once a week. The Men's team competes in the BUCS West Midlands League, with male and female competitors also entering National events. Follow BCU Squash on Instagram.
Table Tennis
Players of all abilities and genders are welcome. Training sessions take place once a week.
Volleyball - Men and Women
BCU have a Men's and Women's Volleyball team that compete in the BUCS West Midlands League. There are a mix of coached and uncoached sessions during the week. Follow BCU Volleyball on Instagram.
