How easy is it to get to Birmingham?

Thanks to Birmingham's great transport links, students join us from far and wide!

Thankfully, Birmingham is one of the best-connected major cities in terms of transport in the whole country. So we’ve scoured all the ways you can get in and out of the city, to show you how easy it is to get to Birmingham City University.

Train

Birmingham New Street or Grand Central is the central train station of the city and has trains running all day to places that are just 5 minutes away to places that will take you a few hours to get to.

The city is also served by Birmingham Moor Street and Snow Hill, which also run a lot of trains across the region every day. Our City Centre Campus is only a short walk away from all three of these stations, and our City South Campus is close to Five Ways train station, which is a three-minute train ride away from New Street.

Tram

Alongside our massive train network, Birmingham also sits on the Midlands Metro tram line. This 14-mile stretch of track runs between Wolverhampton, the Jewellery Quarter (where our School of Jewellery is located), Birmingham City Centre and Edgbaston (where our City South Campus is located).

The trams run from as early as 5am until midnight, with extended hours on weekends. At peak times, they run every 6 minutes, so they are a very reliable way of getting to and from home if you live near one of the 31 stops.

The Midlands Metro Tram line is also being extended over the next few years. New lines are planned to cover more areas of Birmingham, stretching as far as Solihull.

Bus

West Midlands Buses run from the city centre all over Birmingham, you can get pretty much anywhere on a bus in Brum! Plus, you can get a student pass during term time to keep costs down.

Car, bike or foot

Our City Centre Campus is a five-minute drive away from the M6 motorway, which makes it very easy to get to the campus from places like Wolverhampton, Walsall, West Bromwich and Sutton Coldfield. Several A roads also run close to the Campus, allowing access to the likes of Dudley, Halesowen and Solihull. Our City South Campus is only a 15-minute car drive away too. Wondering where you’ll leave the car? Take a look at our parking guide (link).

If you’re already living in Birmingham, it is also a great city to get around on a bike or by foot. We’ve got plenty of bike racks at both of our campuses, so you can take the green way in and save money!
