Why apply to university by the UCAS deadline

The 2026 UCAS deadline is 14 January 2026, but with other opportunities to apply throughout the year and in Clearing, what’s the rush?

Last year, 81.8% of those asked had submitted their UCAS application 2 weeks before the UCAS deadline (The Student Room, 2025). We have 5 reasons why so many people get their application in on time.

1. More university options

As the year goes by, there will be less university places available. Competitive courses and courses that require placement, such as healthcare courses, fill up quickly.

Don’t take the risk and miss out on the course or university!

2. Take the stress out of final year

The final year of sixth form or college can be a busy one, with exams, coursework and revision to fit in. Get your application and personal statement out of the way so you have more time to focus on getting the grades you need for university.

3. More time to explore your options

You can make five choices on your UCAS application, so applying to a university in January doesn’t mean you’re tied down.

You still have plenty of time to do your research and attend Open Days or Offer Holder Days to see which one is the right fit for you before you confirm your firm and insurance choice.

4. Get ahead with finances and accommodation

Once your UCAS application is submitted in January, you’ll soon have another application to complete – student finance! Student finance applications usually open in March. You’ll want to prioritise getting this completed so you receive your funding on time.

Plus, once you receive an offer, you can apply for accommodation. Accommodation is usually allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, so Clearing students may not have as many options.

5. Receive the best support from teachers and advisors

Before the UCAS deadline, your teachers and advisors will be focused on making sure your personal statement is complete and providing your references. As the year goes by, they’ll have different priorities, like getting ready for your exams!

Frequently asked application questions:

When is the UCAS deadline for 2026 entry?

The main UCAS deadline for 2026 entry is 14 January 2026 at 18:00 (UK time).

What happens if I miss the UCAS January deadline?

If you miss the January deadline, you can still apply, but some competitive courses may already be full. Applying early gives you the best chance of getting an offer for your first choice universities and courses.

What is UCAS Extra?

If you've used all five choices on your UCAS application, and you're not holding any offers, then UCAS Extra gives you another chance to gain a university offer.

What is UCAS Clearing?

Clearing is a process that lets students apply for university places that haven’t yet been filled.

It's a great option if you don't get the grades you were hoping for on results day, you change your mind about the course or university you've already applied to, or you decide to go to university at the last minute. However, there can be limited course options available during Clearing.
