Dr Charlotte Carey currently leads BCU’s Entrepreneurship research cluster, which is part of the CEIG research centre. Charlotte sits within the Marketing subject teaching team and in addition to UG and PG teaching leads on doctoral supervision development work for the school.
She has a creative background, starting her career as a self-employed audio-visual artist and film-maker. Her interest in technology led to her co-running another start-up: a web design and marketing consultancy based in Birmingham’s Custard Factory. Here she developed her digital marketing expertise. She has worked as a lecturer in new media, multi-media design and web design in learning organisations across the West Midlands.
Charlotte has worked as a Researcher, Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and now Associate Professor in Digital Marketing within the Department of Marketing and Leisure Economies at Birmingham City Business School. Her teaching and research focusses on Digital Marketing; Entrepreneurship within the creative industries and Entrepreneurship Education and where these overlap. Throughout this time she has acquired an in depth knowledge of the digital and creative industries sector, a sensitive appreciation of business issues, alongside a deep understanding of the parameters and barriers faced by individuals accessing these industries.
She has been an active researcher throughout this time, spoken at many conferences, and been a keynote speaker on multiple occasions and written research papers and has a growing body of work published in academic peer-reviewed journals related to this work. Including her own PhD in 2013 Charlotte, successfully, defended her PhD: “Gender and Entrepreneurship in Creative Industry Career Journeys” and is now developing this for publication.
Charlotte has co-organised a number of research conferences on behalf of the university related to creative enterprise and gender and is a referee for a number of journals and conferences in the small business and entrepreneurship field and as the Co-chair of the Creative Industries track and SIG for ISBE (Institute of small business and entrepreneurship). She is currently external examiner for the MA Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship at Goldsmith, University of London.
