BRAIN: Centre for Responsible Innovation in Big Data and Artificial Intelligence

Building Responsible AI and Data Innovation for Business and Society

The Centre for Responsible Innovation in Big Data & Artificial Intelligence (BRAIN) helps businesses make informed decisions about adopting AI and data-driven innovations by bringing together technical expertise, rigorous evaluation, and strong ethical foundations. Whether you are exploring research collaboration, knowledge transfer, commercial partnerships, or routes to translation, BRAIN provides a clear pathway from idea to evidence and real-world implementation.

Making an impact with AI

At the heart of BRAIN is a single guiding question: where can emerging advances in AI and big data deliver a meaningful benefit for business and society, and where do they create risk or potential harm? We do more than build prototypes. We develop and apply rigorous methods for evaluation and assurance, focusing on what works in practice, what is ethically defensible, and what produces lasting value.

Working with Industry

We work with industry partners, NHS trusts, national AI assurance teams, and financial institutions to deliver high-impact research and innovation that addresses real operational challenges. Our work spans AI in healthcare, accounting and finance, digital twins for supply-chain optimisation, and generative AI and multi-agent systems for business transformation, with an emphasis on usability, safety, sustainability, and measurable outcomes.

Active collaborations include NHS England’s AI Quality Community of Practice, NHS Bristol Heart Institute, University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, University of Birmingham, University of Bristol, Costain, Morgan Sindall, Transport for London, and international partners such as Georgetown University, Qatar University, MBZUAI, and Universidad Panamericana (Mexico).

We are building the future of responsible AI through evidence-led research and real-world implementation.
