This May, as part of the Britain’s Most Admired Companies Research, Birmingham City Business School were proud to host an evening with Justin King, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of supermarket giant Sainsbury’s.
During the event, a guest lecture was given by Mr King, who was awarded 2014's Britain’s Most Admired Leader, in this year’s peer review survey, conducted by Birmingham City Business School academic Professor Mike Brown, and published in collaboration with Management Today. The evening was introduced by Dawn Albery, the new Dean of the Business School and was compared by Matthew Gwyther, Executive Editor of Management Today.
Mr King, who has recently announced that he is stepping down from his CEO position after 10 years at the helm, gave a presentation about leadership entitled ‘Leading with values, determination and focus’, something which is very dear to his heart. He spoke about developments within the company, including how Sainsbury’s have improved their reputation and position in the market share, their performance, targets, goals and vision. During the event he stated that “the Britain’s Most Admired Leaders Award is the one I am most proud of”, which reinforces the character of the corporate reputation peer review survey.
The event was well attended, with an audience consisting of senior business people from the region, as well as staff and directorate members of the University, which provided an excellent opportunity for networking.
Other recent guest lectures in this series have included Sir Terry Leahy (former CEO of Tesco); Jeremy Durroch (CEO of Sky); Rob Perrins (CEO of Berkeley Group); Paul Walsh (CEO of Diageo); Amanda Sourry (UK Chairman of Unilever) and Martin Sorrell (CEO of WPP, and the winner of the 2013 Most Admired Leader).
