Teach First

What is Teach First?

Teach FirstTeach First is a pioneering education charity that works to ensure that all children, regardless of their family income, receive a first class education. The charity partners with Birmingham City University to train inspirational primary and secondary school teachers. They recruit, train and support graduates as teachers to work in schools in low income communities.

The two-year Leadership Development Programme provides world-class teacher and leadership training for people who are passionate about giving children from the poorest backgrounds a great education. The programme includes Qualified Teacher Status at the end of the first year, and participants gain a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) on successful completion of the second.

Following four years as regional provider for the West Midlands, Birmingham City University have been awarded a prestigious contract to deliver the Teach First programme across both the West and East Midlands, as well as offering an opportunity to top up the PGDE to a full Master’s degree.

The University was recognised for its achievements as one of the leading providers of primary and secondary teacher training in the UK, training more teachers than any other university in the West Midlands. Due to the University’s capacity to be able to train large numbers of students, over 160 Teach First participants per cohort were taught at the institute between 2013 and 2017, with numbers rising to over 275 for the 2017 Cohort.

Since launching in 2002 Teach First has successfully placed more than 10,000 teachers in schools across the UK, who have gone on to teach and inspire more than one million children. In 2016 the organisation was ranked third in The Times list of the Top 100 graduate employers, proving that teaching is a hugely popular career choice for graduates.
