Simon is currently the course lead for our undergraduate secondary education with QTS provision; he is also part of the science team and teaches across a range of both undergraduate and post-graduate teacher training routes at Birmingham City University.
Simon has taught Science, being a specialist in Biology, in secondary schools across London and the West Midlands. He has had extensive experience of both middle and senior leadership with a particular focus on teaching and learning, staff development and supporting schools through his role as a Specialist Leader of Education within the Teaching Schools Alliances.
Simon has also worked closely in developing the science curriculum through his consultancy work with the AQA exam board and the Royal Society of Biology. He is also a member of the Association of Science Education, and has played a strategic role in the current and ongoing discussions surrounding the role of practical work within the science curriculum.
He has been involved in Initial Teacher Education at Birmingham City University since 2009, working across a range of programmes including Teach First, PGCE, School Direct and leading the university provision for subject knowledge enhancement courses across the sector. He also holds a national role for TeachFirst as the science curriculum knowledge assessment lead across the country. This requires him to lead and manage a team of science academics across a number of universities in developing the TeachFirst science curriculum.
Simon has an extensive and expert knowledge and understanding in Science subject pedagogy, the Science curriculum and a broad knowledge and understanding in wider professional studies.
Simon is at present studying for his Doctorate which focuses on the impact of Science in secondary schools in terms of developing pupils’ critical thinking and enquiry. Working with colleagues across a number of universities, Simon is leading the development of resources to support schools in developing science enquiry across the curriculum.
Whilst at Birmingham City University Simon has contributed to teaching and learning on the following courses: PGCE and PGDE Secondary Teach First, PGCE Secondary School Direct, PGCE Primary, BA Primary with QTS, SKE and now leads the provision of the undergraduate secondary with QTS.
