Our international marketing top-up degree gives you the chance to broaden your knowledge of marketing within the global business environment. We’ll teach you to apply your knowledge to real business scenarios, helping you to progress into employment, having already dealt with many situations you find in the working world.
You’ll be put into a range of exciting and innovative scenarios, strengthening your expertise and learning from different cultures and experiences.
On this top-up year, you will take a range of advanced modules that look at current marketing methods and contemporary business issues, such as contemporary advertising, e-business and marketing strategy and planning.
Hands-on learning will go alongside more conventional teaching methods like lectures and seminars on this course. You’ll be put in a range of scenarios, such as assuming the role of an international marketing manager, strengthening your expertise in the areas employers want. You’ll get to mix and collaborate with students on other marketing courses and exchange different ideas and experiences.
The course combines business theory with exciting current marketing themes, such as emerging digital media and the importance of a positive consumer experience. From day one, you’ll start to understand how organisations operate and what their current challenges and opportunities are. You’ll look at how emerging technologies and consumer experience can have a profound effect on how successful a business can be.
You’ll have the opportunity to work on real-life briefs with real clients, thanks to our own student marketing agency, The Link, which is run by our undergraduates and students take on live client briefs, with our students recently getting to work on a campaign for the Bullring.
You will benefit from close tutor support and form strong partnerships with our staff. They are all marketing experts who have had successful careers, and they’ll share their experience and marketing know-how with you.

There are no compulsory additional costs or charges associated with studying on this course. While you may choose to purchase personal copies of text books, all our key text books are available from our library or online (subject to normal library loan and online access arrangements).
Based on the past experience of our students, you might find it helpful to set aside about £50 for each year of your studies for your personal stationery and study materials. All our students are provided with 100 free pages of printing each year to a maximum total value of £15.

Strategic Marketing, Management and Planning
The success of most businesses rests with the effectiveness of their marketing strategy and planning, as it is the central determinant of returns to investors. Income is maximised when marketing undertakes effective planning that is driven by an appreciation and understanding of the marketplace, the consumer and the wider external environment. Therefore, it is mandatory that any marketing graduate has an understanding of strategy and planning, as it enables activities to be directed to the specific needs of that organisation.
With the business environment undergoing constant changes, organisations can no longer obtain a competitive advantage by simply producing high-quality products. This module will equip you with the knowledge you need to be successful in e-business, using modern techniques to push business products.
The Emerging Themes module is closely aligned to the philosophy, aims and learning outcomes of the marketing suite of awards because it is directly related to the examination of practice and the impact of that practice. As a level 6 marketing module our focus is on developing competencies in the areas of academic research, critical evaluation, independent working and a willingness to take initiative in the application of marketing concepts in the strategic decision making process. This module will develop and challenge you in all of these areas equipping you with the skills employers demand.
Cross Cultural Consumer Behaviour
In accordance with the programme philosophy and level 6 learning outcomes, you will be applying and evaluating consumer behaviour theories and models in a cross-cultural context to develop and justify persuasive marketing solutions for businesses dealing with a culturally diverse consumer base. You will also be involved in forming effective methods of communicating these concepts and ideas.
In doing so you will further develop the transferrable skills crucial to your profession, such as the ability to undertake extensive cross-cultural research, in-depth analysis, visual presentation and the defence of your arguments. This module will equip you with the knowledge, understanding and cultural awareness necessary to engage with the diversity of consumer values and behaviour in contemporary markets, resulting in you becoming an effective global citizen.
International Marketing Planning
The international marketer faces numerous challenges that require detailed understanding of global business environment, in order to make complex marketing decisions. This module will explore a range of international marketing topics that will enable students to appreciate the multifaceted nature of cross border marketing decisions and the important role of marketing strategies within international businesses. It will provide you with the opportunity to gain insight into the major differences between the role of the marketing manager in a domestic and international marketing decision making, appreciating the cultural diversity, shifts in market requirements and opportunities of newly emerging markets.
In order to complete this course a student must successfully complete at least 20 credits from the following list of OPTIONAL modules.
Creative marketing communication tools and techniques are continuously evolving. In line with the programme aims you will use both academic theory and current industry to develop a full advertising proposal and pitch, mirroring the work that advertising agencies do. This distinct opportunity to develop the skills need to both develop and present advertising concepts is vital for a successful career in this area. Taking this comprehensive view of the industry, you will critique current practices and theoretical concepts in order to create your own campaign.
Public Relations Planning and Corporate Reputation
Public Relations is increasingly being used strategically by organisations, profit and non-profit alike, to improve their reputations and achieve organisational goals. As a result, there is a growing demand for graduates who have the skills and understanding to assist organisations in maintaining their reputation through strategic Public Relations
This module will focus on the public relations function in organisations, its role in maintaining the organisation’s reputation, the creativity and innovation needed by those working in this field, and the role of the planning process.
All core modules are guaranteed to run. Optional modules will vary from year to year and the published list is indicative only.
Overall you’ll study six modules, with assessments taking place at the end of each term. Assessment includes a range of methods designed to mirror the real world of marketing , as well as exams. You’ll be asked to produce marketing plans, portfolios and case studies, and take part in group presentations and projects.
You’ll spend time in lectures, seminars and one-on-one sessions with your tutors and we encourage you to get involved with extra-curricular activities to help your CV such as mentoring, creating blogs or even competitions to design your own business. We believe it’s very important to support you in making the most of your time with us to get the most from your top-up year as you can.
If you are interested in undertaking part of your studies abroad, the Erasmus scheme may be of interest to you. It allows higher education students to study for part of their degree in another European country.
It is open to undergraduates in their second year (or above) and offers a unique opportunity to enhance your CV and experience new cultures. If you study with us you will have access to an Erasmus co-ordinator, who can provide information about which institutions we have links with.
When you complete your top up degree, you can go on to study the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Professional Diploma. At the end of the course you can complete two extra modules to get the CIM Professional Diploma in Marketing. Unlike other institutions, our course covers your extra tuition and CIM membership. Graduating with a professional diploma as well as a degree will enhance your employability, as you’ll have a host of specialist and transferrable skills that businesses always search for.
You can also stay with us to do your postgraduate studies on courses such as MA Public Relations and MSc Management and Marketing.
There are many opportunities to visit businesses and meet experts and professionals. We encourage you to attend events, enter national and international competitions and get involved with clients through The Link.
Ashan Khan was awarded one of our travel scholarships and went out to Marrakech for two weeks. He volunteered in a variety of places, helping to build orphanages and support people with Down’s Syndrome. He credits his experience with landing him a marketing internship at Renault Retail Group.

This course allows you to tailor your study around the job role and the career you want. By teaching you to apply what you learn to real business scenarios, you can walk into employment, having already dealt with many situations you find in the working world.

OpportUNIty: Student Jobs on Campus ensures that our students are given a first opportunity to fill many part-time temporary positions within the University. This allows you to work while you study with us, fitting the job around your course commitments. By taking part in the scheme, you will gain valuable experiences and employability skills, enhancing your prospects in the job market.
It will also allow you to become more involved in University life by delivering, leading and supporting many aspects of the learning experience, from administration to research and mentoring roles.
