Research to PhD in Biomedical Engineering
Salman Abdullah, from Lahore Pakistan has completed a placement year as part of his Electronics degree before progressing onto his PhD.
After finishing his A levels with top grades he wanted to pursue further studies in the field of Electronics in order to keep up to date with the modern technology. Choosing the right University was challenging due to the fact there are so many universities in UK. He chose BCU because it has a track record of alumni securing a job in the first six months of their graduation and also because Birmingham is a multi-cultural city, giving him the opportunity to socialise with people from all around the globe.
What placements have you experienced?
During my undergraduate degree in Electronic Engineering I spent my one year placement year as an Electronics Placement Student in Birmingham City University.
What was your favourite thing about your placement?
I really enjoyed working with the senior lecturers and professors who helped to nurture me as a professional.
What skills did you learn from your placement year?
There were many skills that I learnt on my placement year including:
- Working on electronic projects for the university helped me improve my technical skills, including programming
- Working as a demonstrator to support first and second year students helped me enhance my academic skills and gain more confidence
- I organised many events during my placement year for the electronic students such as a trip to Jaguar Land Rover and BT Madley Station.
What do you hope the achieve in the future?
The skills and experience which I gained from the placement year gave me confidence and ability to pursue the route towards academia.
