Reflection is an essential requirement of the revalidation process governed by the NMC for all nurses, and is an essential concept in supporting safe and emotionally intelligent practice for any healthcare practitioner.
Reflection and reflective practice are not new concepts. The analysis of experience to enable learning, whether it be in the form of critical incident analysis, understanding our actions, or in terms of wishing to understand ourselves to heighten our levels of self-awareness has been of prominence for a number of years in areas such as education, social work and nursing. There is a wealth of literature written on this very matter. Not only literature on what reflection is, but the importance, and benefits of it as it relates to our practice. Reflection it has been determined is an important aspect of practice and the health care practitioner should embody what it is to be the effective reflective practitioner.

This course is suitable for anyone working in the healthcare sector wishing to gain credits for prior learning through reflection, or on a modular based programme.
In-line with the Professional Practice framework philosophy this module is a level 6 optional module, situated within a flexible pathway that aims to meet the specific academic needs of individual practitioners. A blended learning approach is taken in accord with the university’s learning and teaching strategy and the programme’s philosophy and aims. The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to critically reflect on and evaluate learning which has occurred through prior experience. The purpose of this module is to enable and support you to reflect in a written format in order to produce a piece of critical reflection that profiles’ learning that has previously occurred. This piece can be marked against the assessment criteria, giving you a mark that will contribute towards your degree classification, and recognition in the form of level 6 credits for prior experiential learning.
This module aligns with the Professional Practice Programme philosophy and is designed to be flexible and practice-led. You will have the opportunity to develop skills of enquiry, reflection and problem solving. A blended learning approach is taken (incorporating, introductory classroom sessions, one to one tutorials as per your needs and online support via Moodle) in line with the university’s learning and teaching strategy. You will be encouraged to think critically and share practice experiences with your fellow students, as well as engaging in both directed and self-directed learning activities. You will be an active partner in your own learning and development and in return you will receive regular feedback and feedforward aimed at developing your academic skills, and have the opportunity to discuss your progress with the module team.

This course is student centred and focused upon self-directed study. The emphasis is on the learning that has taken place from reflecting on previous practice, for example attending a non-credit bearing training day. You will submit a reflective piece of writing that analyses the learning that has taken place as a result of the experience. This method will allow you to develop not only your ability to articulate themselves on paper, but it will engender engagement with reflection, supporting development in the area of reflective practice.
This aligns with the Learning and Teaching Strategy as development of independent critical thinking is a key area of concern. Within the healthcare professions reflective practice is perceived as a tool supporting effective and safe practice by developing emotional intelligence within you, and is now a requirement for revalidation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
Students will be assessed using the mode of an essay which will be a critically analytical reflective piece that profiles prior learning.

The creation of our new suite of courses in Sport and Life Sciences is yet another exciting development at Birmingham City University. The 10,500sq metre building at City South Campus will enable us to offer a wide range of new health, nutrition, biomedical science and sports courses, as well as providing a new home for our education programmes.
Not only are we investing £41 million in a new building to house the laboratories and teaching spaces needed, but we also plan to open up these facilities to benefit all students and the wider community. Visitors to the gym can choose a personalised fitness programme, instructed by qualified fitness trainers, and take advantage of a selection of classes, such as yoga, salsa or body combat.
Nicola is a registered mental health nurse completing her degree with honours in Mental Health Nursing at Oxford Brookes University. She has an MSc in General Psychiatry which she completed at Keele Postgraduate Medical School. In 2013 Nicola was awarded her Educational Doctorate and she has since become a Senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She is a SEDA accredited doctoral supervisor and also a certified Reality Therapist and qualified beautician.
