Overview
AI Futures: Artificial Intelligence, Data and Intelligent Systems is a 40-credit modular programme designed to provide an accessible introduction to the technologies shaping the future of business, industry and society.
Combining Computer Programming and Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, this modular programme develops the fundamental skills required to design software solutions, work with data and understand the principles behind modern AI systems. You will explore how intelligent technologies are developed, the challenges and opportunities they present, and how programming underpins today's data-driven world.
Through practical activities and real-world examples, you'll gain hands-on experience while developing the knowledge needed to engage with emerging technologies confidently and responsibly.
Eligible for Lifelong Learning Entitlement (LLE) funding, this flexible modular offer provides an ideal route for learners looking to upskill, retrain or build foundations for further study in computing, data science and artificial intelligence.
Applications for this course will open in early October. To register your interest and be notified when applications open, please complete our register of interest form.

Course in Depth
Modules
This module provides an introduction to programming as a fundamental tool for technology and innovation. You will learn how to analyse problems, design software solutions and develop programs using a modern programming language. Topics include input and output operations, data structures, functions, iteration, objects and classes, graphical user interfaces, testing and documentation. Practical sessions enable you to build and test software while developing core problem-solving and coding skills.
This module introduces the principles, techniques and applications of artificial intelligence. You will explore how AI systems are developed and used across different sectors, while considering the risks, benefits and ethical implications of AI adoption. The module covers topics including the evolution of AI, intelligent systems, machine learning concepts, statistical analysis and data-driven decision-making. Through practical activities and case studies, you will develop an understanding of the technologies that are transforming organisations and society.
How you learn
Teaching takes place via lectures, practical workshops, laboratory activities and independent study to help you develop both technical knowledge and applied skills.
You will learn how to design, develop and test software while building confidence in using modern programming tools and techniques. Alongside this, you will explore the key concepts that underpin artificial intelligence, including knowledge representation, machine learning, data analysis and the responsible use of AI technologies.
Practical learning forms a central part of our curriculum. Through programming exercises, data-driven investigations and AI case studies, you will build experience in tackling real-world challenges using digital technologies.
Further studies
On successful completion of these modules, you could progress onto our BSc (Hons) Cyber Security. You would receive Recognition of Prior Learning for these modules meaning that you would not have to study them again.
Entry Requirements
Essential requirements
Our typical academic entry requirement is 48 UCAS tariff points or above. However, we recognise that applicants may have gained skills and knowledge through a range of routes and will also consider applications from those who do not meet this requirement but can demonstrate achievement at Level 2 and/or Level 3, together with relevant experience.
If you are returning to study and have previously completed a degree or other higher education qualification, we will accept a qualification in any discipline.
If you have a qualification that is not listed, please contact us.
Fees & How to Apply
UK students
Annual and modular tuition fees shown are applicable to the first year of study. The University reserves the right to increase fees for subsequent years of study in line with increases in inflation (capped at 5%) or to reflect changes in Government funding policies or changes agreed by Parliament. View fees for continuing students.
International students
Sorry, this course is not available to International students.
Employability
Enhancing employability skills
Artificial intelligence, programming and data skills are increasingly valuable across every sector of the economy. These modules provide a strong foundation in the technical and analytical capabilities sought by employers operating in digitally enabled environments.
During your studies you will develop skills in:
- Computational thinking and problem solving
- Programming using modern development tools
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Understanding AI systems and intelligent technologies
- Critical evaluation of technology and its ethical implications
- Communication and collaborative working
- Independent learning and digital literacy.
These transferable capabilities prepare learners for both technical and non-technical roles where digital innovation, automation and intelligent systems are becoming increasingly important.
