In the jazz department, our annual prizes make fantastic concerts, and this one is no exception. Come and hear the RBC Jazz Orchestra play new Big Band compositions and arrangements in this celebration of student writing. Many of our students go on to further successes in composition and arranging, from being in-house arranger for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Peter Whittingham Award winners to guest appearances as director and composer for NDR Big Band in Hamburg.
The legendary jazz composer Mike Gibbs will be there in person to nominate a front runner. Mike Gibbs has been dubbed “arranger to the stars of jazz” since he seems to be first call by the likes of John Scofield, Gary Burton and Bill Frisell if they want one of their compositions arranged for jazz orchestra. Mike has also inspired a generation of jazz composers with his own original writing so it is a great honour and pleasure to have our rich association with him as our principle guest artist in jazz composition.
The concert will be directed by newly appointed Jazz dept lecturer and fine composer and arranger in his own right, Ed Puddick.
