Different Trane (2013) – Mike Fletcher
Different Trane is a project that started life as a commission from Tony Dudley-Evans and was premiered as part of the Reich:Influences festival in Birmingham in 2013. Tony was inspired by reading an interview with Steve Reich in which the composer reflected on the influence of John Coltrane’s modal music on his own approach to composition, particularly the album Africa/Brass. Fletcher’s Different Trane is a contemporary, multi-part reimagining of the relationship between modal jazz and minimalist music.
In this event composer Mike Fletcher and promoter/commissioner Tony Dudley-Evans reflect on the origins of the project before a full performance of Different Trane by RBC students.
This event is part of the BCU Jazz Research Cluster series.
