Tonight’s concert by RBC dedicated new music group, Thallein Ensemble, focuses on works by staff composers, exploring themes of place, location and society. Luke Bedford paints a dazzling evocation of Johannesburg, whilst Michael Wolters takes a walk into odd corners of the city of Hamburg. Joe Cutler deconstructs the folk music of the Polish Tatra Mountains, and Andrew Toovey visits Eyjafjallajökull, an ice cap covering an active stratovolcano in southern Iceland that famously disrupted European air travel during its 2010 eruption. Not all the locations visited tonight are external, as Bobbie-Jane Gardner’s Tapeworm for jazz improvisors explores the inner relationship between a host and a parasite.
Before or after the concert, you are also invited to experience Benjamin Tassie’s film work Earth of Shine and Dark Mottling, taking place in Workshop 6.
