India Through Rāga - A Musical Journey into the Heart of India
Dr Radhika Balakrishnan
India is a country of immense diversity, a mosaic of languages, cultures, beliefs, traditions and artistic expressions. And at the heart of this diversity is music.
For centuries, music in India has been far more than entertainment. It has been a vehicle for devotion and philosophy, a keeper of tradition, a voice of identity and resistance, and a space for creativity, innovation and human expression.
India Through Rāga invites audiences on a journey into this extraordinary musical world, using Carnatic classical music as a gateway to discovering India.
Through lecture and live demonstration, Dr Radhika Balakrishnan introduces the ideas of rāga, tāla and improvisation, while exploring the cultural and philosophical worlds that have shaped Indian music. Along the way, the audience encounters the many faces of India's musical landscape, from classical and folk traditions to Sufi, cinema, popular and contemporary music.
At the centre of this journey is rāga: not simply a scale or melody, but a living musical language capable of evoking mood, emotion, time and experience.
This is an invitation to hear India differently — to encounter her customs, ideas, beliefs and stories through the music that has carried them across generations.
Come discover India through her music.
