Mary Okyere

Accountancy - BA (Hons)

Mary was initially rejected from her firm university choice, and decided her insurance choice wasn’t for her. Having originally turned down her offer from BCU, she joined the university through Clearing and began her journey into a career in Accounting.

"I was rejected from my original firm university choice, and decided I didn’t want to go to my insurance choice.

So I came to BCU through Clearing – it was one of my five original UCAS choices, so I knew about the course and what to expect.

I had always wanted to go to university because I wanted that experience of meeting new people, studying a subject I was interested in and developing my skills for professional life.

At the very beginning, I found it difficult to approach the lecturers and other staff members for help. However I soon realised that they were there for me whenever I needed, whether it was academic help or employability advice. This additional help and welcoming is a free bonus above and beyond what you expect to be included in the tuition fees.

There are so many opportunities offered to us at BCU. I’ve been so humbled to have been given the chance to go to China, to mentor young students in Birmingham, to have volunteered in Morocco with underprivileged kids amongst so many other things. I know that this is all shaping me into a better person, giving me a wide range of transferrable skills I can take with me into employment.

‘I AM BCU’ to me means that I belong to a great, diverse and successful community where, although we all come from different backgrounds, journeys and places, we are still one and we all belong here together."
