Our BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering course at BCU offers a comprehensive curriculum to develop your skills across several audio disciplines and employment sectors. We have recently revalidated this course in collaboration with industry professionals, ensuring that our curriculum meets the needs of industry.
Multiple career paths
Our course focuses on four main pillars of employability – live sound, acoustics, studio production, and audio hardware and software development. You will be introduced to all aspects of sound – and over the course you can tailor your experience to your area of interest. Our aim is to prepare you for industry, so that you feel confident to take on your first graduate job.
A diverse mix of student backgrounds
Our course welcomes students who have studied a wide range of level 3 subjects. Students from IT, maths, science and engineering backgrounds can apply their skills in an exciting and practical discipline. Or for those from a musical background, you’ll get the opportunity to learn more about the science of sound, and the hard work that goes on behind the scenes within the audio industries.
Cutting-edge facilities
We are proud to offer our students a wide range of facilities across campus to support you with your studies. You will use industry-standard tools such as Logic, Pro Tools, MATLAB, Python, and C++. You will study on state-of-the-art Solid State Logic (SSL) recording consoles, run live sound sessions with industry-standard PA, and utilise our vast array of microphones from Neumann, Brauner and AKG. Our partnership with the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, located on the BCU campus, provides access to world class recording studios, and a number of professional performance venues.
We are also proud of our SoundLab at STEAMhouse, an immersive space that accurately replicates real or simulated environments to test audio performance.

Collaborate with musicians
Our partnership with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire not only gives you access to state-of-the-art facilities, but it also provides a great opportunity to collaborate with aspiring professional musicians. You will get to work on lots of different projects with different musicians and performers – one week you could be working with a rock band and a string quartet the next!

With 25 years of experience delivering audio science degrees at BCU, you'll benefit from a strong network of industry professionals - many of whom are proud alumni of our courses. You will gain invaluable experience and networking opportunities through our Industrial Mentors forum and annual Innovation Fest, connecting you with leading employers and excellent job prospects. Our alumni regularly return to campus to speak to and inspire our current students.

Birmingham is home to many live music venues with a thriving music scene, many of our students gain experience by independently taking on voluntary and paid work supporting live music at small music venues across the city.
