Tommaso Maggio

Tommaso has been working in design education for almost twenty years and has taught design principles and approaches in Italy, Mexico, China, and Thailand. His experience goes from the early years to higher education. His PhD studies are under the umbrella of design education, with the aim to initiate cultural awareness and inclusiveness.

Tommaso teaches Graphic Communication to undergraduate students on our Visual Communication programme based at our Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Arts (BIFCA) in Wuhan. He is part of the research cluster Material Encounters.

Tommaso's works have been exhibited widely at design weeks events in Milan, Berlin, Istanbul and Brussels between 2006 and 2010. He has also had work exhibited at Duke Contemporary Art Gallery in Bangkok 2021, and international conferences at Cumulus Hong Kong 2016.

Tommaso has shared his experiences as a keynote speaker on education, design pedagogy and interdisciplinary conferences promoted by large NGO to Universities, design institutes and interdisciplinary hosts across the world, including China, Greece, US, Ukraine, UK and Spain. He has led design thinking workshops for industrial associations and companies operating from insurance to healthcare sectors in Italy, Mexico, and Thailand. 

As a practitioner and researcher, Tommaso has collaborated with diplomatic missions, research hubs, a fashion house, a publishing house, hospitality, computer technology corporation, manufactory industries, and he is actively involved in supporting students to get involved in the design and visual communication industries.
