Dr Emma Ransome is the School Lead for Teaching and Learning Quality at Birmingham City University. With over fifteen years’ experience across the education sector, she brings extensive professional and academic expertise to her work in higher education. Her practice is grounded in an applied, student centred approach to curriculum development, assessment, educational enhancement and student success.
As School Lead for Teaching and Learning Quality, Emma provides strategic leadership for teaching, learning, assessment and educational quality across the School. She leads approaches to curriculum enhancement, assessment and feedback, course monitoring and enhancement, quality improvement and staff development. Her work focuses on strengthening academic standards, improving the student experience and supporting equitable student outcomes through coherent, evidence informed approaches to enhancement.
A significant area of Emma’s leadership is the strategic use of generative AI in higher education. She leads and contributes to work exploring how AI can transform teaching, learning and assessment, supporting colleagues to move beyond simply responding to AI towards purposeful, pedagogically informed and responsible AI adoption. Her work considers how assessment can evolve in response to generative AI while maintaining academic integrity, authenticity, inclusivity and educational quality. She also supports academic teams to develop confidence and capability in using AI, while critically considering its implications for assessment design, student learning, staff practice, academic standards and equity. Her approach positions AI not simply as a technological development, but as a catalyst for educational transformation and enhancement.
Across her academic leadership, Emma is committed to moving beyond fragmented initiatives towards coherent, evidence informed approaches to teaching and learning quality. Her work brings together student voice, quality data, academic expertise, educational research and emerging technologies to identify what needs to change, evaluate impact and embed effective practice.
