Sanctuary Scholarship

2026 Entry

We are proud to be a University of Sanctuary, part of the established UK-wide Universities of Sanctuary scheme. As a University of Sanctuary, we provide support for students from a refugee background, including a dedicated scholarship.

About the scholarship

We are offering two Sanctuary Scholarships for undergraduate entry in September 2026. These scholarships are for new students who have sought asylum in the UK but do not have access to Student Finance from the UK government. 

The scholarship includes, for each academic year of the course:

  •       full tuition fee waiver
  •       £8,877 bursary for course and living costs
  •       free university halls accommodation.

Entry Criteria

To be considered for a BCU Sanctuary Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • you have been granted and currently have discretionary or limited leave to remain or some other temporary leave following an asylum application made in the UK

OR

  • you are an asylum seeker (or the dependent of an asylum seeker and included on the asylum application), can evidence your current immigration status as an asylum seeker (or dependent of an asylum seeker) and have an active asylum claim with UK Home Office

AND

  • you are not able to access Student Finance from the UK government (student loans and grants) because of your immigration status in the UK
  • you have a firm unconditional or firm conditional offer of a place to study a full-time undergraduate degree (including Foundation Year entry) at Birmingham City University, commencing in September 2026.
  • you have not already obtained a degree or degree-equivalent qualification

Excluded courses

The following courses are excluded from the Sanctuary Scholarship

    • Sub-degree courses such as, Foundation Degrees and HNC/HND (NB Foundation Year entry courses are eligible for the Scholarship)
    • Courses delivered by BCU partners
    • Fast-track/accelerated degrees 
    • Part-time courses 
    • Professional Practice/CPD courses 
    • Short courses (credit-bearing and non-credit-bearing)
    • Apprenticeships 
    • Distance learning/online courses

Which academic year is the Scholarship available for?

The terms and conditions shown on this page are for those starting in the 2026/27 academic year – joining courses in September 2026

How to apply

To apply, please complete this application form. You will also need to send the following documents to oie@bcu.ac.uk. Please include your full name and applicant ID with your email.

  • a copy of your e-visa
  • a 750 word reference from someone who knows you well (but is not a relation).

The reference should outline:

  • The applicant's personal and financial circumstances and what barriers have they overcome to continue their education?
  • What contributions, to the referee's knowledge, has the student made to college life and/or their community?
  • How does the referee think the student would benefit from the scholarship?
  • Any other information that the referee believes is relevant to the student's application.
