Henderson Awards
The Henderson Awards celebrate and reward exceptional students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievement and a commitment to their studies.
Each year, 25 students receive a one-off award of £2,000 in recognition of their academic performance, attendance and engagement during their time at Birmingham City University.
The award is designed to acknowledge dedication, perseverance and success, while providing additional financial support to help students continue achieving their goals.
What is the Henderson Award?
The Henderson Award is a prestigious recognition award for students who consistently demonstrate excellence throughout their studies.
Successful students receive a £2,000 award, which can be used to support their studies, professional development or future aspirations.
Recipients are selected based on a combination of:
- Academic achievement
- Attendance and engagement
- Commitment to their studies
- Overall contribution to their academic success
Who is eligible
To be considered for a Henderson Award, students must:

Be enrolled on an eligible degree programme at Birmingham City University. Please see list of eligible degrees below

Demonstrate consistently strong academic performance

Maintain a high level of attendance and engagement throughout the year

Be progressing successfully through to the next year of study

How are students selected?
There is no separate application process for the Henderson Awards.
Eligible students will automatically be identified at the end of the academic year by the Henderson Committee using student academic performance and attendance data.
The Awards are intended to recognise students who have demonstrated exceptional commitment and achievement to their course and development.
The selection process:

Step 1:
Students are reviewed against the Henderson Award eligibility criteria by the Henderson Committee in June 2027. Academic achievement, attendance and student engagement are considered as part of the assessment process.

Step 2:
25 students are selected to receive a Henderson Award.

Step 3:
Successful recipients are notified and invited to accept their award in July 2027.
What can the award be used for?
The Henderson Award is paid directly to successful students and can be used in any way that supports their academic journey, including:
- Course materials and learning resources
- Professional memberships and accreditation fees
- Specialist equipment or software
- Travel and placement costs
- Postgraduate study preparation
- Career development opportunities
