Moving to University

Moving out of home for the first time can be both exciting and nerve-wracking. Our student Tierney made a video about what it feels like to come from the middle of nowhere to a big city like Birmingham and how she settled into her new life at BCU.

Friday

"I am moving to Birmingham tomorrow and I am really, really nervous about it."

Despite this move having been in the planning for ages, there may still be some chaos as you get ready to leave. Have I remembered everything? How do you budget when you move away? Will eight pairs of shoes be enough to take? Is there enough room in the car for a 42" TV? Perhaps not, but you will need to aim to get the most important thing packed off to uni - that's you!

Saturday

Moving away to uni is feeling quite real now as you get ready to leave. Like Tierney you may be feeling a little emotional about the whole thing. After all, there will be people close that you that you will not be able to bring along for the next part of your journey to uni (apart from whoever you have persuaded to give you a lift there of course!)

When you arrive there will be plenty of time to get used to where you will be living. It won't be long before you start bumping into other people feeling just the same way as you are. You'll soon start to make plans for your first few weeks at university: What's coming up during Welcome Week? What societies will I join? What name will you give to the cactus you brought with you to make you feel at home?

Sunday

If you're up bright an early like Tierney, you may find that many of your new flatmates are having a bit of a lie in on Sunday morning! Whether you spent your night exploring the city or had a night in, you will be on the way to getting settled in your new home.

When you are changing your bedding and hauling your dirty clothes down to the launderette you will know for sure that you're getting used to living independently. Even if you did feel overwhelmed and nervous on that first night, a month on Tierney reflects and says that she "can't see a reason why you wouldn't really want to live in halls." It's like "being an adult on easy mode!"
