Dr Natalie Walsh

Natalie’s research interests focus on children’s reading development, with her doctoral research including topics such as word type reading, emerging reading difficulties and the impact of synthetic phonics teaching. She is interested in how children make the transition from novel readers to skilled adult readers and the literacy-related skills which impact this development.

Before joining Birmingham City University, Natalie taught at Aston University and worked on the longitudinal Aston Literacy Project, examining children's literacy from school entry. Delivering these recent research findings to students, teachers and schools is where Natalie found her passion for teaching.
