Centre for American Legal Studies
The Centre for American Legal Studies (CALS) is a centre of excellence for the study of law and legal matters relating to the USA.
The current work of CALS members relates to federalism and states’ rights, the administration of criminal justice, the nature and role of punishment in the US legal system, the constitutional and socio-legal aspects of race, gender and sexual orientation, the role of experts and evidence in the US court system, comparative aspects of environmental protection law in the US, the US and international trade and the protection of human rights.
The Centre for American Legal Studies is home to an LLB in the American Legal Studies programme, and supports a suite of modules including U.S. Constitutional Law and an American Legal Practice programme. It is led by Director Dr Anne Richardson-Oakes and Associate Director Ilaria Di Gioia. Other academic and research staff are: Prof Jon Yorke, Dr Sarah Cooper, Dr Haydn Davies, Dr Panayotis Protopsaltis; Dr Liviu Damsa and Dr Nkem Adeleye.

In celebration of 25 years of American Legal Studies at Birmingham City University, the Centre for American Legal Studies, in conjunction with the Birmingham Law Society, invites abstracts for presentation at the inaugural lecture of the Judge Joseph A. Greenaway Jr. Lecture Series on Law and Justice.

The British Journal of American Legal Studies is a scholarly journal which publishes articles of interest to the Anglo-American legal community.
Members of CALS come from a wide range of backgrounds and career, but they all have a keen interest in American law.
