Recently appointed as the first female president of Yorkshire County Cricket Club, the former World Cup finalist also believes that leaders should possess the ability to “guide, influence and collaborate for everyone’s greater good”.

Dr Powell, who is also Disability Performance Manager for the England and Wales Cricket Board and has worked for England Hockey and England Lacrosse, is one of three guest speakers who will be sharing their leadership knowledge and insight at a conference held at Birmingham City University (BCU) on Thursday 25 May, 6-9pm.

She will be joined by Janie Frampton, one of FIFA’s first-ever female referee instructors and a former chair of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, and Jim Eyre, chief executive officer of British Equestrian and a former chief operating officer at Premiership rugby club Harlequins.

Mark Jeffreys, Head of BCU Sport, said: “We hope that the evening will provide a lively learning environment, where we consider different leadership styles, and an excellent networking opportunity for our partners and staff and students alike.

“It is also a great opportunity to thank our partners by inviting them to listen to some great speakers from the world of sport who have a wide range of fantastic experiences.”

The leadership conference is being staged by BCU and the Higher Level Skills Match (HLSM) project, which is part-funded by the European Social Fund.

HLSM aims to support the growth of sports clubs and small and medium-sized businesses - as well as provide better access to graduate and student talent.

During the event, which is being held at BCU’s Curzon building in Cardigan Street, there will be an opportunity to network and share ideas.

Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.
