Fashioning Futures

Fashioning Futures - a series of events where esteemed speakers share their perspective on on-going trends in jewellery, fashion and textiles, and Talking Practice  researchers in the same areas, have teamed up to deliver two virtual events exploring trends and entrepreneurship.

This week they welcomed Sally Denton, Founder and Editor of online trends journal HRE AFTA, for an inspiring talk on the concept of slow trends.

Over the past 20+ years, Sally has collaborated with many of the world’s prominent forecasting agencies leading the UK operation for Carlin International. She has also worked in partnership with The Future Laboratory, Peclers Paris, Promostyl, Nelly Rodi, Trend Bible and WGSN, and delivers talks on international trends to industries, academia, and the craft and luxury sectors.

Sally unpacked life changes in a post-COVID landscape, touching on hyper localisation, the ‘shut in’ economy and Black Lives Matter. She explored the current thinking of emerging artists and designers, considering the effects of a disconnected digital life, followed by a Q&A chaired by School of Jewellery lecturer, Kate Thorley.

The School’s next trend event later this month will feature a panel of experts discussing how trends are used in their industries and organisations to inform business decisions and developments. Speakers include Sabinna Rachimova, founder and owner of SABINNA, Sam Barrows, Innovation Manager at Sainsburys, Argos and Habitat, and Amy Lee, Senior Trends and Insights Manager at Avery Dennison.
