Favour Kalu and Aise-Osa Igbinomwahia, postgraduate law students at Birmingham City University School of Law, have drafted an event report to showcase a collaborative research seminar that addressed issues faced by women and girls living with HIV/AIDS globally and the measures that can be taken to protect them. The seminar took place on 1st December 2021 in recognition of World AIDS day.
Dr Alice Storey, Senior Lecturer in Law, led the seminar alongside students, Ms Kalu and Mr Igbinomwahia.
The seminar was hosted by the Centre for Human Rights and the School of Law’s Research Seminar Series. The Centre promotes the protection of human rights, access to justice and the rule of law, around the world.
Equality in gender-related health issues
The seminar report describes Dr Storey's presentation on the work of the centre and its United Nation’s Universal Periodic Review stakeholder reports on Namibia and Eswatini, which focused on how victims of HIV are stigmatised and segregated by the society.
The report covers Ms Kalu’s presentation on issues concerning forced sterilisation of women and discrimination, and Mr Igbinomwahia's discussion of issues faced by sex workers, domestic violence, police harassment and safety at work.
