Laura Smillie is a Lecturer in Law, at Birmingham City University. She teaches on Tort Law, Medical Law and Integrated Research Project on the LLB. Laura also teaches Law of Obligations, and Independent Research Project on the PGDL. Laura is co-module leader for Integrated Research Project (LLB), Law of Obligations (PGDL), and module leader for Independent Research Project (PGDL).

Laura is currently a PhD student (part-time) at Birmingham City University. Laura’s research assesses legal and scientific approaches to allegations of vaccine-harm in the United States. Laura has also published a case comment in the Medical Law Review with her PhD supervisors Dr. Sarah Cooper (Reader in Law at Birmingham City University) and Dr. Mark Eccleston-Turner (Lecturer in Law at Keele University). Laura’s research sits across the Centre for American Legal Studies, and the Centre for Law, Science and Policy.

Laura co-leads the Staff and Student Research Collaborations in the School of Law, alongside Dr. Alice Storey. In September 2019, the School of Law launched the first issue of ‘Forward Thinking, a journal which showcases the excellent research collaborations between students and staff within the Law School. Laura and Alice are the journal editors of Forward Thinking.
