About us

We are a recognised leader in education, training and business solutions, offering a wide range of courses that benefit from active engagement with regional, national and international industry - giving students the best possible introduction to modern engineering.

Our high-quality programmes combined with industry engagement have earned the School accreditation by world-leading professional bodies, such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

Well-equipped laboratories enhance our students' educational experience, providing a bridge between theoretical learning and hands-on teaching to prepare them for a career in industry.

Courses and partnerships

Graduate careers

Our students have gone on to join companies such as Airbus, Bentley Motors, BMW, Cosworth, Daimler, Ford Motor Company, GKN, Honda, Hyundai Hellas, HBOS, Jaguar Cars, Land Rover, London Midland, Morgan Motor Company, Marconi, Rolls-Royce, TRW Automotive and Volkswagen.

Our courses are tailored to meet the needs of employers through partnerships with professional bodies and industry. For example, each new programme is approved, or existing programmes re-approved, by a panel that includes a representative from a relevant industry or professional body.

Our sandwich degree courses offer students the perfect opportunity to work in industry and develop new skills as part of their course, as well as gaining real experience in a working environment.

Integrated Masters courses

Integrated master's degrees

An integrated master’s degree is a four year degree course which combines three years of undergraduate study with an additional fourth year at postgraduate level.

Our academics have worked alongside small, medium and large companies and bring to the table expertise from within the automotive, aerospace, manufacturing, ICT, environmental and health sectors.

The School works in conjunction with IMechE and other partners to support STEM – the advancement of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in schools – to develop design skills and electronics knowledge in schools.

Another important link developed at the School, is with leading international technology and engineering solution provider, Technosoft, which provides industry-standard computer-aided engineering (CAE) tools.

We have also developed relationships with a number of sector bodies including the Chamber of Commerce, the Accelerate Partnership and the Midlands Aerospace Alliance.

Discover excellent research resources

We already significantly support both small automotive suppliers and global corporations, with our undergraduate and postgraduate students involved in practical research for many engineering and automotive businesses.

Collaborating with industry

Collaboration with industry is at the heart of our teaching, enabling us to keep our courses relevant and up-to-date – and putting our students in prime position for industrial placements, opportunities to contribute to real-life projects, and career opportunities.

For example, EDMS is the UK's first academy for PTC, a leading business software solutions provider to the US Government. This unique opportunity enables us to offer PTC’s progressive product design and lifecycle management solutions across Europe for both research and product development.

Over the last five years we have worked with more than 4,000 businesses from a wide variety of sectors both private and public, including:

  • JCB
  • MIRA
  • AWE
  • Mechatherm
  • Concurrent Engineering
  • ETAS
  • Glasscoat
  • Hampson Aerospace
  • Dura Automotive
  • Hydrapower Dynamics
