Dr Karina Butler

Dr Karina Butler studied International Relations and Political Science at the University of Birmingham, where she received her BA (Hons) followed by a Doctorate in Political Science from the Department of Political Science and International Studies.

Her thesis, later published as a single-authored book, critiques the theoretical and practical limitations of solidarist theorising on the subject of humanitarian intervention; her work calls for a critical approach to focus on the prevention of emergencies rather than their management. The concept of prevention, or deep prevention, considers closely related theories of critical theory, critical pedagogy and humanism.

Currently, and as part of an internal faculty research project, Dr Butler is looking into different ways to adopt a 'practitioner learning community' amongst students and staff as a faculty. This project, led by Dr Katy Vigurs, consists of a series of projects that use research evidence to build a more inclusive practitioner learning community.
