This programme aims to equip students who are front line clinicians or have roles in management and leadership in healthcare. As health care provision becomes increasingly complex, with greater demand for services and more people with multiple long term conditions plus the shortages of skilled professionals, there is a growing importance on how health care needs to improve and transform. 

What's covered in the course?

The overall aim of this programme is for you to continue to develop yourself and your leadership and management skills by understanding and reflecting on people and team’s behaviours and their effect on an organisation’s development and its ability to improve. The programme explores global health challenges and their relevance to your everyday practice. This will develop your research and leadership skills to enhance your critical thinking.

This programme’s core modules can be studied individually or can be combined into a Postgraduate Certificate. You can study 3 additional modules and gain a Postgraduate Diploma, and to achieve a Masters Degree you are also required to undertake the Dissertation module.

An honours degree of a British University or equivalent institution (minimum 2:2) OR An equivalent graduate level qualification from an overseas university or equivalent institution (minimum 2:2)

Students should have previous level 6 awards or provide evidence of equivalent study. International students will also  additionally require an IELTS score of 6 in all of the exam domains.

If you have not previously studied at level 6 you will be offered the opportunity, (if considered appropriate), prior to commencement of a module to write a reflective piece on how the module/programme would benefit and progress your professional development and how this would impact on your service/organisation.

Show that you’ve researched the course offering. What is it about this particular course that appeals to you? Is it the lecturers? The modules? Etc.

What makes you a good postgraduate candidate?

Tutors want to know that you can handle postgraduate study, so show them how your undergraduate experiences or work life has equipped you for a more advanced level of study. Key areas to address are research and group work but this can vary depending on your chosen course.

Relevant academic or work experience

Add anything relevant that relates back to your chosen course and shows how your skills will contribute towards your learning. What extra-curricular activities have you taken part in? What awards have you won? What employment or voluntary experience do you have that has helped you develop transferable skills? How do these specifically relate to the course you are applying for?

You should also mention your future plans and how a postgraduate qualification fits in. Try to look beyond your postgraduate study – do you plan to jump straight into a specific career or follow your studies with a research degree? Lastly, use plain, professional English and, where possible, utilise the language of your chosen industry.

Understanding and Managing Behaviour of self, teams and organisations
20 credits

This module is aimed predominantly at graduate professionals including, health and social care practitioners who wish to benefit from exploring how interpersonal and behavioural skills influence and affect their working life and practice. This module incorporates elements from the Intelligent Behaviour AnalyticsTM programme and is a unique offering to BCU students within this module. Under the guidance of the module facilitators, you will be able to direct your learning across a range of topics including managing self, relationships with others as well as working in teams and organisations.

Innovation, Creativity and Improvement
20 credits

This Module is part of the MSc Transforming and Leading Health Care and explores creativity, innovation and service improvement and the application of these areas to the quality and safety of patient care. The module is designed to give you the experience of understanding reviewing and applying theories of innovation, improvement and change into practice. Assignments and seminars will apply learning in practical situations.

Global Policy in Health Care
20 credits

This module is part of the MSc Transforming and Leading Health Care and critically examines the challenges and issues which effect health and social care leaders globally. As the world gets smaller, the problems that many health care sectors face are remarkably similar: finances, demand, technology, skilled professionals and public health. However, the responses and the innovation in different countries is still rarely shared and considered. This module will review the similarities and the difference in approach and consider how practice and polices from different countries can be considered and potentially incorporated into our thinking locally.

Research: Methods of enquiry

This module specifically addresses the broader programme aims related to “pursuing excellence” and “practice-led, knowledge applied” through a flexible provision that encourages students to develop their research ideas, enabling those on various Health MSc programmes to satisfy their individual learning needs, whilst contributing to their area of study.

Leadership Skills and Project Management for Health and Healthcare
20 credits

This module explicitly addresses students’ personal and/or professional development with a view to enhancing competence for service improvement in a rapidly changing health and healthcare environment. Through a flexible provision, students are inspired to reflect critically upon their individual learning needs as well as their organisations’ practices, to appraise and apply concepts from the literature on leadership, to issues of relevance for their role, organisation and overall programme of study.

Dissertation Module
60 credits

This triple module forms the final bridge between the award of a Postgraduate Diploma and a Health MSc related to a named award. It provides the student with the opportunity to complete a piece of work around a chosen topic in order to demonstrate competence in the planning, execution, analysis and evaluation of a Research Project, a Systematic Review or Project Management. It involves 600 hours of study. The focus is on facilitating the student's independent, critical study in their academic discipline or area of professional practice. It will also serve those who wish to embark on Doctoral studies in the future.

Profiling Experiential Learning
20 credits

In-line with the Professional Practice framework philosophy this module is a level 7 optional module, situated within a flexible pathway that aims to meet the specific academic needs of individual practitioners. A blended learning approach is taken in accord with the university’s learning and teaching strategy and the programme’s philosophy and aims. The module aims to provide you with the opportunity to critically reflect on and evaluate learning which has occurred through prior experience.

Negotiated Study
20 credits

This module is aimed at predominantly graduate healthcare practitioners who wish to negotiate learning of a bespoke topic.

Under the guidance of facilitators, you will be able to direct your learning and identify relevant learning opportunities that you feel enable you to learn more about a specific field of study.

The subject area within this module is student led with guidance and facilitation from designated academic and practice support. You will identify an area of study that you would like to critically review and evaluate and which promotes your clinical development. A significant proportion of the module is based around negotiation with academic and clinical facilitators to identify extended areas of study and opportunities that are possible to enhance your progression towards completion of the study.

How you will learn

This is a very interactive course that will combine academic theory with best practice. You will be asked to explore behaviours and emotions, innovation and improvements and use research and management skills to reflect on how you can contribute positively to an organisations climate and culture. 

Attendance

Your hours per week will vary across the year, with the different modules. However you will on average need to attend the university 2-3 days per week.

This programme equips you with enhanced knowledge in; interpersonal and managerial skills and health care improvement and policy, which contributes positively to employability within areas of health care.

These resources are essential in offering students a hands-on introduction to health and social care practice. Much of our teaching is carried out within our state-of-the-art, £30m Seacole Building, which houses cutting-edge facilities.

In a sector where new techniques are constantly being discovered, we work hard to ensure that students learn using the most up-to-date equipment available. These include the only mock operating theatre in an English university and a cutting-edge radiography virtual clinical training facility, virtual ward and virtual case creator.

Virtual Case Creator

For pre-registration midwives, Virtual Case Creator software contains a range of scenarios to let you experience birthing situations and decide on appropriate interventions in a safe environment.

Hospital Ward

Our mock wards enable you to get a feel of what a ward is really like before you head out for your first placement. They contain ‘Sim Men’, which are demonstration dummies that develop ailments, allowing you to treat them as you would a real patient and build your confidence in reacting to the changing needs of patients.

The Hospital Ward can be adapted from a low care to high dependency care environment with the necessary monitoring equipment.

Part of the package is our SIM baby, SIM man and Mega code kid. There are also nursing manikins for fundamental skills teaching and various equipment to support essential skills teaching, such as blood pressure monitoring venepuncture and cannulation equipment.

Skills Practice and Clinical Enhancement facility

The SPACE (Skills Practice And Clinical Enhancement) learning facility lets you further practice the skills taught in class, at your own pace and convenience.

It is fully stocked with the specialist items and equipment needed for procedures such as taking blood pressure, giving an injection, abdominal examination of a pregnant woman and caring for ill babies in an incubator.

Biomedical Laboratories

We have recently installed new laboratory facilities to help you explore understand the scientific principles underpinning many of our courses. The physiology laboratory is equipped to help you learn about the way the human body works by performing investigative experiments. The biomedical science laboratory is undergoing an upgrade over the summer and will allow you to learn about anatomy, cellular processes, immunology and enzymology in a hands-on way that links directly to day-to-day health care.

Simulation Mannequins

We have several Simulation men (SIM men) and Simulation babies (SIM babies) which are leading edge, anatomically correct mannequins used for teaching specific techniques such as advanced adult and paediatric life support skills, acute and high dependency clinical skills, first aid and communication skills.

The SIM men and SIM baby mannequins are complete with software, which is used to replicate real symptoms, and are enhanced by the manipulation of for example blood pressure, pulse and heart rate for extra realism. SIM Man can also “talk” to the students which adds another dimension to their use in teaching clinical skills and in simulation exercises.

Mary Seacole Library

The Seacole library, based at City South Campus, is one of the UK's largest specialist health education libraries. The state-of-the art facility offers an extensive range of range of information and reference materials set out in a relaxing environment, conducive to studying. There are comfortable seating areas, group study areas, a silent study area and private study rooms.

The Seacole building houses a large open access IT Suite which comprises of 96 PCs, full colour printers, photocopiers and scanners. Our PCs utilise the latest Intel i5 core technology, all with:

  • Fast (unrestricted) internet connectivity
  • Ability to save files to USB, DVD & CD
  • Microsoft Office software
  • Research and statistical software
  • Storage space which can be accessed from any PC across the University and from home

Our PCs are also designed to support students who may have difficulties with reading and writing, featuring specialised software with zooming/magnification and screen reading capabilities, which may also be customised for individual student needs.

The IT Suite offers extended opening hours and is supported by a specialist Open Access Assistant during term time. In addition to the open access PCs within the IT Suite, there are 12 networked student PCs available within Seacole library.

Ann-Marie Cannaby

Dr Ann-Marie Cannaby

Professor of Nursing Sciences

Professor Ann-Marie Cannaby is a Professor of Nursing at Birmingham City University. Prior to this she was the Chief Nursing Officer at Hamad Medical Corporation, Qatar, where she was responsible for providing professional leadership to senior managers across the Corporation’s 8,500 nursing and midwifery staff, ensuring that high standards are set, achieved and maintained.

Ann-Marie’s clinical background is grounded in caring for patients with medical conditions. She has worked within large University Hospitals in the UK and has held a variety of clinical research and managerial roles including the post of Chief Nurse and Chief Operating Officer at the University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS trust.

Ann-Marie is passionate about nursing care and has keen interests in both the nursing and operational/business functions of a hospital to provide the best care for patients. Ann-Marie has maintained an international nursing perspective, and has been involved in nursing and quality projects in Holland, Malawi, Australia and New Zealand.

Ann-Marie is actively involved in research and education and holds a first degree, a Masters degree and a PhD. Her main research interest focuses around the quality and governance of nursing workforce/services, improvement methods and the education of patients.

Dr Jane Powell

Joint Programme Leader for the MSc Transforming and Leading in Health Care

Jane is joint programme leader for Transforming and Leading in Health Care. She is project lead for external projects within the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences, more recently for NIHR WoundTec Health Technology Cooperative. Jane is a member of Women Leading Education Research Interest Group.
