What's covered in this course?
The course philosophy is built on several key principles:
- We will cultivate brave and innovative leaders who are willing to pioneer original approaches and drive positive change in healthcare education. Our aim is to empower educators to provide tailored support to both staff and students, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to excel as practitioners.
- As healthcare settings undergo rapid transformation, we will equip our educators with the tools to navigate these changes effectively. This includes managing student expectations, leveraging technology to enhance learning experiences, and addressing staffing challenges.
- We have a deep understanding of how individuals learn and the theories that underpin effective education. We recognise the importance of theory in guiding our pedagogical practices and maximising every learning opportunity within different healthcare environments.
- We will instil in our educators a commitment to evidence-based practice, emphasising the importance of critically evaluating evidence and questioning established practices to ensure optimal learning outcomes.
- We will encourage educators to challenge norms and historical methods of teaching and learning. This includes promoting interprofessional learning, addressing hierarchical structures, and embracing innovative roles such as Advanced Nurse Practitioners (ANPs) and Student Nursing Associates (SNAs).
- We recognise the continual evolution of learning environments and healthcare landscapes and emphasise the importance of flexibility and adaptability in our educators. We will equip them to respond effectively to emerging challenges and opportunities.
- We acknowledge the shifting demographics of our learner population. Our approach prioritises understanding and adapting to the needs of this new generation while also honouring the expertise of experienced staff.
By grounding our PGCert Health Education in these principles, we aim to cultivate educators who are not only proficient in their practice but also equipped to drive innovation, foster excellence, and adapt to the ever-changing demands of healthcare education.

Course in Depth
Year One
The aim of the module is to provide opportunity for the exploration of adult and professional/vocational learning theories and pedagogies, considered within the context of healthcare environments, relating these to existing practice and procedure, and relevant national and local policy frameworks.
In this module you will critically evaluate a range of contemporary theories of learning within the healthcare environment allowing you to explore existing practice within your own specialist area, focusing on current teaching, learning and assessment techniques. The module will assist you in assessing the impact of your practice in the context of the effectiveness of design and delivery, your students’ own learning experience, engagement with inter-professional collaboration and alignment to local and national policy. In doing so, you will develop a critical understanding of the techniques and technologies used to support effective learning, teaching, and assessment and be able to apply this in enhancing future learning experiences.
The aim of this module is to develop your pedagogical approach in developing new or existing courses or programmes of study/training, equipping yourself with the skills, knowledge and confidence to proactively enhance student learning and teaching experiences.
In this module you will critically reflect on your own developing identity as a health educator and explore how this influences and shapes students’ experience, learning and behaviours. The concept of learning and teaching as situated social practice is explored and you will continue to evaluate and reflect upon your own learning and teaching experiences throughout the module.
The module is designed to introduce the pedagogical research underpinning the development and delivery of effective learning and teaching including situated learning experiences, formal sessions, courses or programmes of study. You will be provided with the opportunity to engage with the different concepts, models and theories to inform and develop your practice.
One of the central threads of the module is creating student centred learning experiences and reflecting upon how you as facilitators can support students to become independent learners and establish effective support mechanisms.
The aim of the module is to equip you with the skills, knowledge and confidence to proactively enhance student learning and teaching experiences through effective design and implementation of assessment, evaluation and feedback strategies.
The module will support you to explore and debate the nuances and challenges associated with providing meaningful, timely and constructive feedback to students in healthcare settings. You will examine issues related to how students experience assessment and feedback and the impact this has on their ongoing development.
In this module you will consider the relationship between assessment, evaluation and feedback as crucial elements in supporting professional development and ensuring quality within an educational framework. Assessment and feedback provide the necessary data for evaluation, which in turn informs professional development and continuous improvement of teaching practices, and it is this interplay that will be fostered within the module, allowing discussion around cultures of performativity, accountability and student development.

Facilities & Staff
Our Facilities
Our Nursing and Midwifery courses are based at our City South campus in leafy Edgbaston.
We’ve spent £41million expanding our facilities at City South. These facilities offer hands-on practical experience, replicating the spaces you will come across in professional practice.
In a sector where new techniques are constantly being discovered, we work hard to ensure that you learn using the most up-to-date equipment available. Alongside physical spaces such as a mock operating theatre and wards, we also make use of online and virtual technology, such as our virtual ward and virtual case creator.

Centre for Skills and Simulation
The Centre for Skills and Simulation offers a range of different spaces which replicate situations that you will encounter in practice. These include hospital wards, an operating theatre and a home environment room.
Our mock wards enable you to get a feel of what a ward is really like before you head out for your first placement. The hospital wards can be adapted from low care to high dependency care environment with the necessary monitoring equipment.
The home environment room is the perfect space for teaching communications skills and allows us to simulate a community setting for our students. It is particularly useful for mental health nurses, learning disability nurses and midwives.
Simulation Manikins
We have several Simulation men (SIM men) and simulation babies (SIM babies) which are anatomically correct manikins used for teaching specific techniques such as advanced adult and paediatric life support skills, acute and high dependency clinical skills, first aid and communication skills. The manikins contain software which replicates real symptoms, and can manipulate indicators such as blood pressure, pulse and heart rate for extra realism. SIM man can even ‘talk’ to the students as they are treating him, to add another dimension to learning.
Computer Facilities
The Seacole building has two open-access IT Suites which offer PCs, printers, photocopiers and scanners. There is also an IT Helpdesk for quick and easy help with your computing or internet issues.
Our PCs utilise the latest Intel i5 core technology, all with:
- Fast (unrestricted) internet connectivity
- Ability to save files to USB, DVD & CD
- Microsoft Office software
- Research and statistical software
- Storage space which can be accessed from any PC across the University and from home
Our PCs are also designed to support students who may have difficulties with reading and writing, featuring specialised software with zooming/magnification and screen reading capabilities, which may also be customised for individual student needs.
In addition to desktop PCs, we also offer a laptop loan facility, allowing students to borrow a laptop for up to six hours while on campus.
