This module aligns with the Professional Practice Programme philosophy and is designed to be flexible and practice-led. You will have the opportunity to develop skills of enquiry, reflection and problem solving. A blended learning approach is taken (incorporating both classroom and online activities via Moodle) in line with the university’s learning and teaching strategy.
You will be encouraged to think critically and share practice experiences with your fellow students, as well as engaging in both directed and self-directed learning activities. You will be an active partner in your own learning and development and in return you will receive regular feedback and feed-forward aimed at developing your academic skills, and have the opportunity to discuss your progress with the module team.

This module is for all healthcare practitioners if you want to enhance your understanding of evidence based practice to help improve your patient/client/service-user care. The aims of the module are to develop both your understanding of the importance of best evidence in practice, and your ability to locate, evaluate, and use best evidence in developing aspects of practice.
Good reasons to study Evidence-Based Practice: Clinical practice does not remain static but changes frequently. As a healthcare practitioner you must be able to justify and rationalise your practice to ensure quality care is provide and maintained. To ensure best practice is sustained you, as a practitioner, need to understand the concepts of evidence based practice and how to apply these concepts to your area of practice.

Our £8.5 million Doug Ellis Sports Centre boasts an 80-station fitness suite, an eight-court sports hall, and workout and spinning studios. The centre offers state-of-the-art fitness training equipment and plenty of room for team sports including five-a-side football and cricket. An all-weather pitch adds the finishing touches to the centre.
Visitors to the gym can choose a personalised fitness programme, instructed by qualified fitness trainers, and take advantage of a selection of classes, such as yoga, salsa or body combat.
Ben is a NMC Registered Nurse Tutor and Senior Lecturer at Birmingham City University. He qualified from City University London and St Bartholomew’s School of Nursing and Midwifery in September 1998, completing a 4-year BSc (Hons) in Nursing and Human Science, and clinically, went on to practice in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Care, Coronary Care and Cardiac Rehabilitation. He completed an MSc in Nursing Research in 2002 from King’s College London, a PGCert Ed from BCU in 2005 and a PhD in Life Sciences in 2016 from the University of Birmingham.
Now a Senior Lecturer, Ben joined BCU in 2004. He teaches on BSc and MSc Health modules, which include Acute Nursing Practice, Evidence Based Practice and Research Methodology. He also supervises BSc and MSc research students. He has also been the Clinical Liaison Link for Adult Nursing and Research Subject Quality Coordinator for the Faculty, and is currently the Research Coordinator for Adult Nursing.
Ben’s research interest is in ‘knowledge mobilisation’ for clinical practice, with an emphasis on exploring health professionals’ research utilisation behaviour. His PhD work focused on Nurses’ and Health Care Assistants’ intentions to use clinical guidelines, he continues to research in this area.
