Partnership - people with hands in the middle

Local Policy Innovation Partnerships are a new initiative funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, part of UK Research & Innovation (UKRI).

The express purpose of LPIPs is to foster collaboration between universities and businesses to tackle levelling up challenges, drive sustainable and inclusive economic growth and reduce regional disparities in the UK.

The inaugural meeting of the West Midlands Local Enterprise Partnership will be a workshop taking place at University of Wolverhampton’s Springfield Campus on 20 June 2023 at 8.30am.

Local businesses are encouraged to attend to discuss the challenges facing the region, their vision for the future, and how universities, policymakers and the private sector can better collaborate. The scope of discussion for this first gathering is intentionally broad and will include:

  • Capitalising on the region’s industrial heritage assets
  • Transforming the image of the region and pride in place
  • Innovation for the future – including implications for sectors and skills
  • The role of culture and the arts in place-based development
  • Creating thriving, inclusive and healthy places for all

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Interim Executive Chair Professor Alison Park says: “LPIPs present an exciting new way of using the UK’s strengths in research and innovation to develop place-based solutions to address the UK’s most pressing local and regional challenges.”

Minister of State for Science, Research and Innovation George Freeman MP comments: “Research and innovation is the ultimate engine for local growth in the UK. Local Policy Innovation Partnerships represent a fantastic opportunity to gather knowledge and insight, ensure cross-pollination of ideas and sharing of expertise between stakeholders at both local and national level to deliver real benefits.”
